CHAPTER 1 — THE DOOR THAT SHOOK THE STREET

The sound of the door slamming cut through the quiet street like a crack of thunder.

Both boys flinched.

From the doorway of a small, faded shop stepped a man in a dark apron, his face tight with anger. He looked at the broken bread on the ground, then at the two children crouched together.

“What do you think you’re doing?” he barked.

The warm-coated boy instinctively moved closer to the hungry one, as if shielding him.

“I just gave him food,” he said calmly.

The man’s eyes narrowed. “That bread is not free. And that boy—” he pointed at the child on the ground “—he’s been stealing scraps from the back of my shop for days.”

The hungry boy shrank instantly, fear flooding his face. “I didn’t steal… I was just—”

“Quiet,” the man snapped.

The street remained silent. People still walked by, but slower now. Watching. Always watching, never stepping in.

The warm-coated boy tightened his grip.

“How much does it cost?” he asked suddenly.

The man blinked. “What?”

“How much for everything he ate… or took.”

A pause.

The wind moved dust across the pavement.

Finally, the man named a number, half annoyed, half curious.

Without hesitation, the boy reached into his pocket and pulled out a small wallet.

And handed over everything inside.
