CHAPTER 3 — THE PLACE WHERE WAITING ENDS

They walked for a long time.
Past the cracked streets. Past the silent people. Past places where no one looked at them twice.
The warm-coated boy led without explaining, only stopping once in a while to make sure the other was still behind him.
Eventually, they reached a small community center at the edge of the town. A simple sign hung above the door:
“OPEN MEALS — NO ONE GOES HUNGRY HERE.”
The hungry boy stopped walking.
“I can’t go in there,” he whispered.
“Why not?” the warm-coated boy asked.
“People like me don’t belong in places like that.”
The warm-coated boy turned to him fully now.
“What people?”
Before the hungry boy could answer, the door opened.
An older woman stood there, looking at them with tired but kind eyes.
“You two look like you’ve been walking a long time,” she said gently. “Come inside before the food gets cold.”
The hungry boy froze again, instinctively stepping back.
But this time, the warm-coated boy didn’t pull him forward.
He just said quietly:
“I’ll go in first.”
And he did.
After a moment… the hungry boy followed.
Inside, the warmth hit him like a memory he never had. Steam rose from bowls of soup. Laughter filled corners he didn’t know could hold sound.
He sat down slowly, as if the chair might disappear.
The warm-coated boy sat beside him.
For the first time, neither of them spoke about leaving.
Hours later, as the sun dipped low outside the window, the hungry boy finally whispered:
“Why did you help me?”
The warm-coated boy looked at him for a long time.
Then answered:
“Because once… someone didn’t help my brother.”
Silence followed.
But it wasn’t the same silence as before.
This one didn’t feel empty.
It felt like something ending… and something else finally beginning.

And for the first time in a very long time—
the hungry boy didn’t wait for anyone to come back.
