Chapter 1: The Offer No One Refused

Chapter 1: The Offer No One Refused

No one spoke.

The ballroom remained frozen beneath glittering crystal chandeliers as shards of champagne glasses sparkled across the marble floor.

Grace slowly lowered her trembling hands.

"I'm... I'm sorry," she whispered to the elderly woman. "I didn't mean to cause trouble."

Margaret DeLuca smiled gently.

"You caused exactly the right kind."

The furious socialite adjusted the diamond necklace around her throat and pointed at Grace.

"She assaulted me! Fire her immediately!"

The banquet manager rushed over, his face pale.

"Grace... pack your things."

Her heart sank.

Of course.

People like her were always the easiest to sacrifice.

Before she could remove her apron, a calm voice echoed through the ballroom.

"No."

One word.

Nothing more.

Yet it silenced every protest.

Dominic DeLuca stepped forward.

His tailored black suit fit perfectly, but it was his presence—not his clothing—that made the room feel smaller.

Even the city's most powerful businessmen lowered their eyes.

Dominic walked past everyone until he stopped beside his mother's wheelchair.

"You tried to strike my mother."

His voice remained almost gentle.

The socialite forced a laugh.

"It was a misunderstanding."

"No."

He looked at Grace.

"She stopped you."

Grace expected gratitude.

Instead, Dominic studied her as though trying to solve a mystery.

"You knew nothing about us."

"No."

"You still stepped in."

"Someone had to."

A faint smile appeared at the corner of Margaret's lips.

Dominic reached into his jacket and handed Grace a simple black business card.

"No logo."

"No title."

Only one phone number.

"If you ever need help..."

"...call."

Grace stared at the card.

"I don't accept charity."

Dominic nodded once.

"Good."

"Neither do I."

Then he turned away.

The party resumed as if nothing had happened.

But every person in that ballroom understood one thing.
