Chapter 10: The Enemy Inside the Family

Chapter 10: The Enemy Inside the Family

The words echoed through the hospital room.

Someone may have tried to weaken you before the confrontation.

Emma stared at Detective Hale, unable to process what she had just heard.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel moved closer.

"Are you saying someone poisoned my wife?"

The detective remained careful with his words.

"We don't know yet."

"The doctors found traces of a sedative compound in her blood."

"Not enough to harm the baby directly."

"But enough to cause dizziness, weakness, and delayed reactions."

Emma's face went pale.

The fall.

The staircase.

The sudden loss of balance.

She had thought Victoria's shove was the only reason she fell.

But now...

What if she had already been struggling to stand?

What if someone had planned every detail?

Michael clenched his jaw.

"This wasn't about a fight."

"No," Detective Hale said.

"It wasn't."

"It was an attempt to make the situation look like an accident."

Daniel walked to the window.

His reflection stared back at him.

A man who had spent years believing he understood his family.

A man who had defended them.

A man who had ignored every warning sign because accepting the truth was too painful.

Now he couldn't escape it.

"My family..."

His voice cracked.

"My family did this."

Emma looked at him quietly.

"Someone in your family."

Daniel turned around.

The correction hurt.

Because she was right.

Not everyone.

But enough people.

Enough silence.

Enough protection.

At the police station...

Detective Hale's team worked through the night.

The investigation had changed completely.

This was no longer only about Victoria.

It was no longer only about the staircase.

It had become a pattern.

A pattern stretching back decades.

A pattern built on fear.

Control.

And secrets.

The forensic analyst entered the room carrying a report.

"We identified the substance."

Hale looked up.

"What is it?"

"A prescription sedative."

"Commonly used for anxiety and sleep disorders."

"Can we trace where it came from?"

The analyst nodded.

"We already did."

He placed a document on the desk.

"The prescription was filled three days ago."

Hale scanned the page.

The name immediately caught his attention.

Victoria Whitmore.

But something didn't make sense.

"She bought it herself?"

"No."

The analyst shook his head.

"Someone used her account."

Hale frowned.

"Who?"

The analyst pointed toward another line.

"The authorization was made from the Whitmore estate."

Meanwhile...

Victoria sat inside an abandoned countryside house.

The place was dark and silent.

The man who helped her escape stood near the window.

She still didn't know his name.

And she didn't trust him.

"You said this would disappear."

The man didn't turn around.

"I said I would protect you."

"You said nobody would find out."

"And nobody will."

Victoria laughed bitterly.

"Everyone knows."

"The police know."

"Daniel knows."

"My father knows."

She stepped closer.

"You promised me."

The man finally looked at her.

"You need to stop thinking like a child."

Victoria's expression hardened.

"A child?"

"Do you know why your father chose you?"

She froze.

"What?"

"He didn't teach you how to run the company."

"He didn't teach you how to build relationships."

"He taught you one thing."

"How to survive."

Victoria stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

The man opened a drawer.

Inside was an old photograph.

He handed it to her.

Victoria looked down.

The photo showed Charles Whitmore twenty-two years earlier.

Standing beside another man.

A man Victoria didn't recognize.

On the back was a date.

The same night Margaret Ellis disappeared.

Victoria looked up.

"Who is this?"

The man answered:

"Someone your father thought he buried forever."

Back at the hospital...

Eleanor Brooks returned to visit Emma.

This time, she brought another box.

Emma looked surprised.

"Another secret?"

Eleanor smiled sadly.

"I wish it were the last one."

She placed the box on the table.

"Your mother left this with me shortly before she died."

Emma froze.

"Before she died?"

Eleanor nodded.

"She knew she was sick."

"She knew she might not be around to protect you."

Inside the box were several letters.

One was addressed:

Emma — Open when you learn the truth about the Whitmores.

Her hands shook.

She opened it.

My beautiful daughter,

If you are reading this, then you finally know the family I spent years trying to understand.

I need you to remember one thing.

Not every Whitmore is your enemy.

But not every Whitmore is innocent.

There is one person who knows the entire truth.

Someone who was there the night Margaret disappeared.

Someone who has been hiding behind another name.

Emma stopped reading.

She looked at Eleanor.

"Another name?"

Eleanor nodded.

"Your mother never trusted names."

"What does that mean?"

Eleanor reached into the box.

She removed an old newspaper clipping.

The headline was partially faded.

LOCAL BUSINESSMAN SAVED AFTER MYSTERIOUS FIRE

Emma read the article.

Then froze.

The photograph showed a younger Charles Whitmore.

Standing beside him...

Was the same unknown man from the photo Victoria had just received.

But this time...

The caption revealed his identity.

Jonathan Vale — Whitmore family advisor.

Emma whispered the name.

"Jonathan..."

An hour later...

Detective Hale arrived with another update.

He placed a photograph on the table.

"We found the person who accessed the medication records."

Emma looked at it.

Her stomach tightened.

The picture showed a man entering the Whitmore estate pharmacy room.

The timestamp:

The night before the gala.

The man's face was clear.

Daniel looked at the photograph.

Then slowly stepped backward.

"No..."

Emma noticed his reaction.

"Daniel?"

He stared at the picture.

"I know him."

"Who is he?"

Daniel's voice became barely audible.

"My father's oldest friend."

Detective Hale looked at him.

"Name?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Jonathan Vale."

Silence filled the room.

The same man connected to Charles.

The same man from the old photograph.

The same man who had apparently helped Victoria escape.

Emma looked at Detective Hale.

"So he's the one behind this?"

The detective didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at the evidence.

Then at the family.

Then at Emma.

"I think..."

"He may be the reason this family has been hiding secrets for twenty years."

That night...

Jonathan Vale stood inside the Whitmore mansion.

Charles sat across from him.

For the first time in decades...

Charles looked afraid.

"You brought my daughter into this."

Jonathan calmly poured himself a drink.

"No."

"I saved your daughter."

Charles stared at him.

"You manipulated her."

Jonathan smiled.

"Victoria was always easy to influence."

A long silence.

Then Charles whispered:

"What do you want?"

Jonathan looked toward the family portraits.

"The same thing I've always wanted."

"Control."

Charles's hands tightened.

"You destroyed everything."

Jonathan smiled.

"No, Charles."

"I simply waited."

He walked toward the door.

"The Whitmore empire was never yours."

"It was only borrowed."

After he left...

Charles looked at the old family portrait.

For the first time, he understood.

The greatest threat to his family had never been outside the mansion.

May you like

It had been standing beside him the entire time.
