Chapter 9: The Last Witness Speaks

Chapter 9: The Last Witness Speaks
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The woman standing in the doorway had just reopened a wound that had been buried for more than twenty years.
Evelyn Carter.
The last person who claimed to have seen Margaret Ellis alive.
Detective Marcus Hale slowly stepped forward.
"Ms. Carter."
The elderly woman looked at him.
Her expression was calm, but her hands trembled slightly.
"I know why you're here."
"Then you know we need your full statement."
She nodded.
"I've been waiting a long time to give it."
Charles Whitmore remained frozen near the fireplace.
His face had lost all color.
"Evelyn..."
The woman's eyes moved toward him.
"Don't say my name like you still have the right."
The room became colder.
Daniel stared at his father.
He had spent his entire life believing Charles was a strict but honorable man.
Now...
He wasn't sure who his father was anymore.
Evelyn slowly walked into the library.
Her eyes moved across the room.
The expensive furniture.
The family portraits.
The symbols of wealth.
"I used to come here every week."
Michael looked confused.
"Why?"
Evelyn looked at him.
"Because your mother trusted me."
A painful silence followed.
"I was Margaret's closest friend."
Michael's expression changed.
"My mother never mentioned you."
"She couldn't."
Evelyn looked down.
"Because after that night..."
"I was afraid."
Detective Hale immediately noticed.
"Afraid of whom?"
Evelyn didn't answer right away.
Instead, she looked at Charles.
"Tell them."
Charles said nothing.
"Tell them what you asked me to do."
Daniel's eyes narrowed.
"Dad?"
Charles remained silent.
Evelyn took a deep breath.
"Twenty-two years ago, Margaret discovered the financial crimes happening inside Whitmore Holdings."
"She wasn't planning to destroy the family."
"She was planning to save it."
Michael clenched his fists.
"Then why did everyone say she betrayed them?"
"Because powerful people are very good at changing the story."
Evelyn looked toward the old cassette recorder.
"Margaret kept copies of everything."
"Documents."
"Financial records."
"Names."
"She knew exposing the truth would destroy people."
Emma quietly asked:
"So why didn't she?"
Evelyn's eyes filled with sadness.
"Because she loved Edward."
Everyone became silent.
"She believed he could still make things right."
The old greenhouse.
Twenty-two years earlier.
Margaret stood among the flowers she loved.
The letter had warned her.
Someone knew.
Someone was coming.
But she still hoped.
She hoped the person walking toward her was Edward.
Instead...
It was Charles.
Her brother-in-law.
The man she had once trusted.
"You shouldn't have looked through those files."
Margaret stepped backward.
"You and Edward were destroying the company."
Charles's face remained cold.
"You don't understand."
"No."
Margaret shook her head.
"I understand perfectly."
"You were moving money."
"You were hiding debt."
"You were willing to sacrifice everyone to protect yourself."
Charles looked toward the door.
"You don't know what you're dealing with."
Margaret held the evidence folder tightly.
"I know exactly what I'm dealing with."
"A man who cares more about his name than people's lives."
That was the moment everything changed.
Back in the present...
Evelyn continued.
"I arrived at the greenhouse ten minutes after Charles left."
Michael looked at her.
"What did you find?"
Evelyn's eyes closed.
"I found Margaret injured."
Emma's hand moved to her mouth.
"Was she alive?"
A painful pause.
"Yes."
Michael's face collapsed.
"She was alive?"
Evelyn nodded.
"She held my hand."
"She told me to protect you."
Michael looked away, fighting tears.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Evelyn looked devastated.
"Because Charles threatened me."
Daniel stepped forward.
"He threatened you?"
"He told me if I spoke, he would destroy my family."
"Your job."
"Your home."
"Everything."
Detective Hale's expression hardened.
"And you believed him?"
Evelyn looked at the floor.
"I was wrong."
A tear rolled down her cheek.
"I should have been brave."
Suddenly...
A loud sound came from outside.
Everyone turned.
Police officers rushed through the hallway.
"Detective!"
Hale immediately moved toward them.
"What happened?"
The officer whispered something.
His expression changed.
"What?"
The officer handed him a phone.
Hale read the message.
Then looked toward everyone.
"Victoria has escaped custody."
The room exploded.
"What?"
"How?"
"When?"
Detective Hale looked serious.
"During transport."
"Someone created a distraction."
Daniel stared at the floor.
"No..."
Emma looked at him.
"What?"
Daniel's face turned pale.
"I know who helped her."
Everyone looked at him.
"Who?"
Daniel swallowed.
"My father's security chief."
Detective Hale frowned.
"Why would he help Victoria?"
Daniel looked toward Charles.
"Because he's been loyal to my father for thirty years."
The implication was immediate.
If Charles had someone on the inside...
Then this wasn't just about old secrets.
Someone was still actively protecting them.
Meanwhile...
A black SUV raced through the empty highway outside the city.
Victoria sat in the back seat, still wearing the same clothes from detention.
Her hands were free.
But her mind was trapped.
Across from her sat the man who had arranged her escape.
She stared at him.
"You knew about the investigation."
The man didn't respond.
"You knew about Michael."
Still nothing.
Victoria's frustration grew.
"Who are you protecting?"
Finally, the man looked at her.
"You don't understand what your family is."
Victoria frowned.
"What does that mean?"
He answered quietly:
"Your father didn't create the Whitmore empire."
"He inherited it."
Victoria froze.
"What are you saying?"
The man looked out the window.
"I'm saying..."
"The truth about your family began long before Charles."
A pause.
"And it ends with you."
Back at the mansion...
Detective Hale received another call.
This time...
From the hospital.
His expression changed instantly.
"What?"
Everyone watched him.
After several seconds, he lowered the phone.
"Emma..."
She looked at him.
"What happened?"
Hale hesitated.
"The doctors found something during your examination."
Her heart raced.
"What?"
He looked toward Daniel.
Then Michael.
Then back at Emma.
"They found evidence that your fall may not have been the only attempt against you."
The room went silent.
Emma's face turned pale.
"What do you mean?"
Detective Hale's voice became quieter.
"The medical team discovered traces of a substance in your blood."
Daniel stood immediately.
"Substance?"
Hale nodded.
"Someone may have tried to weaken you before the confrontation."
Emma felt the world spin.
Victoria hadn't just pushed her.
Someone had planned everything.
The argument.
The fall.
The accusation.
All of it.
And now the question everyone feared remained:
May you like
Who had really been controlling Victoria?
