Chapter 15 - The Yellow Jacket Confession.

Adrian asked to meet Evelyn before giving his second formal statement.

Noah refused to let them speak privately.

Evelyn agreed with him.

They met in an interview room with Olivia, Noah, and Adrian's attorney present.

The yellow tuxedo jacket lay folded on the table.

Evelyn stared at it.

"Why did you bring that?"

Adrian touched the sleeve.

"Because the inside pocket matters."

He turned the jacket over.

A tailor had sewn a narrow hidden compartment into the lining.

Adrian removed a tiny digital recorder.

Noah looked at him in disbelief.

"You have been carrying evidence for three days?"

"I forgot it was there."

"Convenient."

"I used it for donor notes."

Adrian looked ashamed.

"Sometimes I recorded conversations so I could remember names and promises."

Olivia said, "Was it running at the gala?"

"For part of it."

"Why?"

"I had just finished talking to a donor."

Noah bagged the recorder before anyone played it.

A technician created a forensic copy.

The recording began at 7:52 p.m.

Adrian chatted with donors.

He complimented a senator's speech.

He joked about the ridiculous yellow jacket.

At 8:08, the crowd noise faded as he entered the east corridor.

Warren's voice appeared.

"Your mother says we move tonight."

Adrian answered, "I told her I don't want the kid involved."

Warren said, "The target is Evelyn's clutch."

"What's in the packet?"

"Enough to make her look like Michael's accomplice."

"And then?"

"She loses control of the trust while the investigation runs."

Adrian swore.

"This is insane."

Warren laughed.

"You signed the collateral papers."

"That doesn't make this sane."

"It makes you obedient."

The recording cut as Adrian entered the ballroom.

It resumed at 8:18.

Mara's voice whispered.

"She changed it."

Adrian asked, "Changed what?"

"The purse."

"Whose purse?"

"Lily's."

A sharp breath came from Adrian.

"No."

"It's already done."

"Take it out."

"I can't."

"Mara, take it out."

"Your mother said do it now."

"Not the kid."

Mara whispered, "You already agreed."

Then Celeste's voice entered clearly.

"Adrian."

Silence.

"Do not make me repeat myself."

Adrian said, "This was supposed to be Evelyn."

Celeste replied, "A widow accused of theft gets sympathy."

"A child gets outrage."

"And a violent mother gives us the rest."

Evelyn felt her hands go cold.

The recording continued.

Adrian asked, "Violent?"

Celeste said, "Provoke her."

"No."

"Then I will give Graham the collateral file tonight."

"You'd destroy me too?"

Celeste's voice remained almost gentle.

"I would save the institution."

The recording ended thirty seconds before Adrian confronted Lily.

Nobody spoke in the interview room.

Evelyn looked at the yellow jacket again.

The symbol of Adrian's arrogance had been carrying proof against Celeste the entire time.

"You could have played this Saturday," Evelyn said.

"I didn't remember."

"You remembered enough to call me about the ultraviolet ink."

Adrian nodded.

"Because I remembered Warren saying the wrapper mattered."

"But not the recorder?"

"I haven't worn the jacket since the gala."

His attorney said, "The jacket was collected from his hotel suite this morning."

Noah remained skeptical but accepted the chain for forensic review.

Evelyn leaned forward.

"Tell me about Michael."

Adrian's face changed.

"Which part?"

"The night he died."

He looked toward Noah.

"I already gave most of it."

"Give all of it."

Adrian inhaled slowly.

"Michael confronted me that afternoon."

"About the collateral loans?"

"Yes."

"What did he say?"

"That he had proof my mother used the foundation assets as security for private borrowing."

"And you?"

"I told him to stop."

"Why?"

"Because I knew what she did to people who threatened her."

"What did she do?"

Adrian looked at Thomas's name on a statement folder.

"She isolated my stepfather after his stroke."

"She destroyed a former auditor's career."

"She had a donor's tax investigation leaked after he challenged her."

"She made problems look self-inflicted."

Evelyn's throat tightened.

"And Michael?"

"I begged him not to leave alone."

"Then you were in the garage."

"Yes."

"Warren was there."

"Yes."

"You knew something was wrong."

"I knew something might be wrong."

Evelyn's voice sharpened.

"Do not hide behind grammar."

Adrian closed his eyes.

"I was afraid."

"Michael was your friend once."

"I know."

"He defended you when the board wanted to remove you after the London loan scandal."

"I know."

"And you let him drive into rain."

Adrian's eyes filled.

"I know."

Evelyn looked away before his guilt could become something that demanded compassion.

"What did you throw in the garage?"

Adrian frowned.

"My access card."

"Why?"

"Warren told me to leave."

"I told him I was done taking orders."

"Then I threw the card at him."

Noah made a note.

"Did Warren touch Michael's car?"

"I didn't see him."

"Did Celeste tell you anything after the crash?"

Adrian nodded.

"She called me before police called Evelyn."

Evelyn turned back.

"What time?"

"11:34."

Michael's crash had been reported at 11:27.

The first responding officer did not identify him until 11:41.

"How did she know?" Noah asked.

"She said Warren called."

"What exactly did she say?"

Adrian swallowed.

"She said, 'Michael will not be at the board meeting tomorrow.'"

Evelyn felt the room narrow.

"Did she say he was dead?"

"Not then."

"What did you ask?"

"I asked what she had done."

"And?"

"She told me not to be melodramatic."

Noah wrote rapidly.

"Anything else?"

Adrian looked at the recorder on the evidence tray.

"I recorded that call too."

Everyone stared at him.

"Where?" Noah asked.

"Not on this recorder."

"Then where?"

"My old donor-note archive."

"Location?"

Adrian looked directly at Evelyn.

"The server my mother is trying to destroy at Warehouse 17."

Noah stood.

His phone rang before he reached the door.

New Jersey authorities had entered Warehouse 17.

Most paper records were secured.

The server room was not.

Someone had triggered an automated wipe fifteen minutes earlier.

The archive was disappearing file by file.

After the yellow-jacket recording ended, nobody rushed to fill the silence.

Evelyn realized that silence could mean something different now.

At the gala it had been hesitation.

In the interview room it was recognition.

Everyone present understood they had heard Celeste convert a child into a public-relations instrument.

Adrian stared at the jacket as though it belonged to someone else.

Evelyn hoped he never found that distance comforting.

The jacket had not made him cruel.

It had only become the costume he happened to be wearing when his choices were finally recorded.
