Chapter 8 - Six Lanterns Under the Moon.

Evelyn had kept Michael's phone number active for six months after his death.

She had canceled it only when hearing his voicemail greeting became unbearable.

The carrier reassigned the number three months later.

Noah confirmed that fact within an hour.

The current subscriber was a construction company in Queens.

The company denied sending Thomas any message.

The text had been spoofed.

Someone wanted Thomas to believe Michael was guiding him.

The question was why.

They returned to Claire's apartment after dark.

Thomas was taken to the precinct to give a formal statement about the break-in and the bank access.

Sam remained under police protection.

Warren Kessler escaped through a subway entrance near the church.

Noah circulated his photograph across the department.

Evelyn sat at Claire's kitchen island with the encrypted drive connected to an offline laptop.

The screen displayed a single password field.

Lily sat beside her wearing pajamas covered in tiny purple stars.

"Daddy said I know the password?" Lily asked.

"Maybe not a password exactly."

Evelyn tried to smile.

"Maybe something he used to say to you."

Lily thought.

"He said lots of things."

Claire brought hot chocolate.

"What about six lanterns under the moon?"

Lily brightened slightly.

"That's from our story."

Evelyn looked at her.

"What story?"

"Daddy's train story."

Another small piece of Michael's life existed between father and daughter without Evelyn knowing.

She tried not to let the grief show.

"Tell me."

Lily wrapped both hands around the mug.

"There was a train that couldn't find its station."

"Okay."

"It had to pass six lanterns under the moon."

"Then what?"

"Then it saw the purple bridge."

Evelyn typed SIXLANTERNSUNDERTHEMOON.

The drive rejected it.

Lily shook her head.

"Daddy always asked what came after."

"What did you say?"

"Purple bridge, silver river, home."

Evelyn typed PURPLEBRIDGESILVERRIVERHOME.

The drive unlocked.

Claire covered her mouth.

Evelyn stared at the folder tree.

Michael had created directories named after ordinary household items.

GROCERIES.

DENTIST.

TAXES.

LILY SCHOOL.

Inside TAXES were hundreds of financial records.

Inside DENTIST were emails between Adrian and offshore lenders.

Inside GROCERIES were board minutes that had never appeared in official archives.

And inside LILY SCHOOL was a folder titled YELLOW BIRD.

Evelyn opened it.

The first file was audio.

Michael's voice filled the kitchen.

"October fourteenth, 9:12 p.m., Vale Foundation executive office."

Evelyn gripped the counter.

Hearing him unexpectedly hurt so sharply that she almost stopped the recording.

Then Celeste's voice appeared.

It was distant but recognizable.

"The Hart trust is the only block we cannot predict."

Adrian answered.

"Michael will vote with us."

"Michael is asking questions."

"Then replace him."

Celeste laughed once.

"You still think titles solve problems."

Paper rustled.

Celeste continued.

"If Michael leaves, Evelyn controls the trust for Lily."

"Evelyn hates board politics."

"Today."

"What does that mean?"

"It means people become political when their children's futures are involved."

There was a pause.

Then Adrian said, "So what do you want me to do?"

Celeste's answer came slowly.

"Nothing yet."

The recording ended.

Claire stared at the laptop.

"That doesn't prove the gala."

"No," Evelyn said.

"But it proves Michael was worried before he resigned."

The next recording was dated three days before his death.

Michael spoke first.

"If you're hearing this, I was right about the collateral records."

Then another voice joined him.

Thomas.

"Celeste moved the Hartwell Star through a private loan company."

Michael asked, "Does Adrian know?"

Thomas answered, "He signed the guarantee."

"Did he understand it?"

"He understood enough to know it was illegal."

The recording contained more.

Thomas described Warren Kessler moving boxes from a basement archive after midnight.

Michael said he would copy everything before confronting the board.

Then Thomas said something that made Evelyn freeze.

"Do not tell Claire."

Michael replied, "Why?"

"Because Celeste has someone close to Evelyn."

Claire slowly lowered her mug.

Evelyn turned toward her sister.

The recording continued.

Michael asked, "Who?"

Thomas said, "I don't know yet."

Claire looked wounded.

"Ev, I had nothing to do with this."

"I know."

But Evelyn realized she did not know anything with certainty anymore.

The next file was a video from Michael's office.

The date was the afternoon before his fatal crash.

Michael sat alone at his desk.

He looked exhausted.

"Evelyn," he said into the camera.

She stopped breathing.

"If I do not make it home tomorrow, I need you to understand that none of this started with Adrian."

His eyes moved toward the office door.

"He is reckless, vain, and compromised."

"But he is also afraid of someone."

Michael leaned closer to the camera.

"The person you need to fear is the one who can make Adrian apologize without raising her voice."

Evelyn knew exactly who he meant.

Celeste.

Michael continued.

"There is one more thing."

His face tightened.

"I found evidence that someone accessed Lily's trust files using Evelyn's credentials."

Evelyn stared at the screen.

"I never gave anyone my credentials," she whispered.

The video Michael looked almost directly at her.

"If they try to make you believe you signed something, do not believe the paper."

"Check the signature date against where you actually were."

The video ended.

Olivia, who had been listening through speakerphone, immediately said, "Search the drive for trust documents."

Evelyn typed TRUST.

Four files appeared.

One was a proxy authorization supposedly signed by Evelyn eight months ago.

It granted temporary voting control of Lily's shares to Celeste Vale.

The signature looked perfect.

The date was February seventeenth.

Evelyn remembered February seventeenth because Lily had undergone an emergency appendectomy that morning.

Evelyn had spent the entire day at the hospital.

Claire had been the attending physician who arranged the surgical consult.

"I can prove where you were," Claire said.

Olivia's voice sharpened through the phone.

"And if that proxy was ever filed, we have forgery tied directly to the trust."

Evelyn opened the file metadata.

The document had been created on a foundation computer assigned to one employee.

Mara Quinn.

Then Lily pointed at the screen.

"Mommy, what's that picture?"

A thumbnail at the bottom of the folder showed a security-camera still.

Evelyn opened it.

The image was grainy but clear enough.

It showed Michael in the foundation garage the night he died.

He stood beside his car.

Warren Kessler stood behind him.

And near the exit, almost hidden in shadow, Adrian waited in the yellow jacket.

After Lily unlocked the drive, she lost interest in the financial files almost immediately.

She wanted to hear the train story again.

Evelyn promised they would find every piece Michael had recorded.

Lily asked whether Daddy had hidden clues because he knew Mommy was good at mysteries.

Evelyn laughed through tears.

Michael would have said she hated mysteries and demanded answers too quickly.

Still, the idea comforted Lily.

So Evelyn let her believe for one night that her father had designed a treasure hunt instead of an emergency plan.
