Chapter 1: The First Step

Chapter 1: The First Step

The ballroom held its breath.

The woman stared at the little boy's hand.

Then she took another step.

And another.

Each movement sent shockwaves through the room.

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

For seven years, she had lived inside that wheelchair.

Seven years of doctors.

Seven years of therapy.

Seven years of hearing the same words:

"There's nothing more we can do."

Yet now she was standing.

Not perfectly.

Not steadily.

But standing.

The crowd erupted into applause.

People cried openly.

The orchestra members wiped tears from their eyes.

The little boy smiled.

"See?"

The woman laughed through her tears.

"I don't understand."

Neither did anyone else.

She looked down at him.

"Who are you?"

For the first time, uncertainty crossed the boy's face.

"My name is Noah."

"Where are your parents?"

Noah's smile faded.

"They're gone."

Silence fell again.

The woman knelt carefully before him.

"What do you mean?"

Noah pulled a small photograph from his pocket.

The picture showed a young woman sitting in a hospital bed.

Beside her stood a little boy.

The same little boy.

"That's my mom."

The woman took the photo.

Her hands began to shake.

Because she recognized the face immediately.

Years ago, during her darkest days in rehabilitation, one patient had inspired everyone around her.

A woman who never stopped encouraging others.

A woman who kept saying:

"If your heart is still fighting, your story isn't over."

That woman was Noah's mother.

And she had died three years earlier.

The ballroom stood speechless.

The woman looked at Noah with tears in her eyes.

"Your mother saved me once."

May you like

Noah smiled.

"She told me you would need help again someday."
