Chapter 1

Chapter 1: The Secret Emma Was Carrying
My hands were shaking.
Emma sat on the edge of her bed, staring at the carpet.
I could barely breathe.
“Dad... there's something else.”
The words echoed inside my head.
I swallowed hard.
“What else, sweetheart?”
Emma hesitated.
Then she reached beneath her pillow.
And pulled out a small pink notebook.
I recognized it immediately.
It was her diary.
She held it with both hands.
“I wrote everything down.”
My heart pounded.
“Everything?”
She nodded.
“Every time Grandpa got angry.”
The room seemed to tilt.
Angry?
Richard Carter wasn't known for anger.
To everyone else, he was calm.
Patient.
Generous.
The perfect grandfather.
Emma opened the diary.
Pages filled with childish handwriting.
Dates.
Notes.
Drawings.
And details no eight-year-old should ever have to record.
February 12
"Grandpa squeezed my arm because I spilled juice."
March 3
"Grandpa said not to tell Daddy because Daddy would be sad."
April 8
"Grandpa grabbed me when I tried to leave the garage."
My vision blurred.
The entries continued for months.
Each one worse than the last.
Then Emma pointed to the final page.
A page written just three nights earlier.
The handwriting was shaky.
Uneven.
Almost desperate.
"Grandpa said if I tell Daddy, he'll lose someone he loves."
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?”
Emma burst into tears.
“He said Mommy already knows.”
The world stopped.
Lauren?
My wife?
No.
No.
That couldn't be true.
But deep down, something horrible began connecting itself.
The excuses.
The canceled visits.
The strange silences whenever Emma mentioned my parents.
Suddenly none of it felt random anymore.

I looked at my daughter.
And for the first time that day, I realized this nightmare might be much bigger than my father alone.
