Chapter 2

Chapter 2: The Truth Comes Out

That afternoon, I drove Emma to my sister Sarah's house.

I didn't tell Lauren where we were going.

I needed answers first.

Then I went straight to my parents' home.

My father answered the door smiling.

“Michael! Ready for the recital?”

The smile vanished when he saw my face.

“We need to talk.”

His eyes narrowed.

Inside.

The living room felt suffocating.

Family photos covered every wall.

Photos of Emma.

Photos of birthdays.

Photos of vacations.

All of them suddenly looked like lies.

I pulled out my phone.

Displayed the bruises.

And watched the color drain from his face.

For a moment neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered:

“She told you.”

It wasn't a denial.

It was a confession.

My stomach twisted.

“You did this?”

Tears filled his eyes.

“I never meant to hurt her.”

I wanted to scream.

Instead I forced myself to listen.

The truth came out piece by piece.

My father had been struggling with early cognitive decline.

Mood swings.

Unpredictable bursts of aggression.

Doctors had warned him months earlier.

But his pride wouldn't allow him to accept help.

The worst part?

Lauren knew.

My wife had discovered the diagnosis weeks before the bruises appeared.

She thought she could manage it.

Thought she could keep everyone calm until treatment started.

She was wrong.

Terribly wrong.

By hiding the truth, she had left Emma alone with a man who was becoming increasingly dangerous.

I left the house shaking.

Not because I hated my father.

But because I finally understood that good intentions can still destroy lives.
