Chapter 10 - The Question Nobody Wanted to Ask

Everyone around me avoided one word.

Murder.

The prosecutors preferred unlawful restraint.

Aggravated assault.

Fraud.

Conspiracy.

Endangerment.

Those words were careful.

Professional.

Controlled.

But Evelyn’s message changed everything.

When the papers are done, we’ll decide whether she comes back inside.

That was not discipline.

That was not humiliation.

That was a family discussing whether I would be allowed to survive.

The district attorney came to the hospital personally.

Her name was Susan Keller.

She wore a navy suit and spoke without wasting words.

“We are reevaluating charges.”

“Against Daniel?”

“And Evelyn.”

“Mara?”

“She’s in a different position.”

I looked toward the window.

“Because she cooperated.”

“Because the evidence indicates she participated in the confinement but objected when the situation escalated.”

“She still left me there.”

“Yes.”

Keller did not soften it.

“She will answer for that.”

I appreciated her honesty.

“What happens now?”

“We build the strongest case supported by evidence.”

“And the murder question?”

She met my eyes.

“If we can establish intent or knowledge that your death was a probable outcome, the charges become substantially more serious.”

I remembered Daniel carefully avoiding the straw when he poured water.

That detail once seemed like proof he wanted me alive.

Now I understood another interpretation.

He wanted me alive long enough.

Long enough for paperwork.

Long enough for signatures.

Long enough for the money.

“How do you prove what someone intended?”

I asked.

“Sometimes they tell us.”

Daniel did.

Not directly.

But his devices did.

Police recovered his cloud backups.

Deleted messages returned.

Search history returned.

Draft emails returned.

A search from ten days earlier made Ruiz stare at me before showing it.

HOW LONG CAN SOMEONE SURVIVE WITHOUT FOOD IF GIVEN WATER.

Another.

EFFECTS OF PROLONGED IMMOBILIZATION DURING PREGNANCY.

Another.

CAN STRESS CAUSE PREMATURE LABOR.

I felt cold despite the hospital blankets.

Daniel had researched my suffering.

He had planned variables.

Food.

Water.

Time.

Pregnancy.

He had treated my body like an experiment.

Then investigators found one more search.

HOW LONG BEFORE LOCATION TRACKING DATA DISAPPEARS.

The irony was almost perfect.

The tracker Daniel placed on me to control me had become evidence against him.

He had documented his own crime.

That afternoon, doctors finally allowed me to leave the hospital.

I did not return home.

Thomas arranged a secure apartment through a victim assistance program.

The address stayed confidential.

Mara moved somewhere else.

Daniel and Evelyn remained jailed.

Victor was charged and denied bail.

For the first night in weeks, I slept behind a door nobody in Daniel’s family could unlock.

At 2:00 a.m., I woke from a nightmare.

My throat searched automatically for the straw.

My hands clawed at blankets because my body believed they were dirt.

Then the baby moved.

One kick.

Then another.

I sat in the dark with both hands around my stomach.

“We made it.”

The words broke something open inside me.

I cried until sunrise.

At 7:16 a.m., my new phone rang.

Blocked number.

I almost ignored it.

Then I answered.

Nobody spoke.

I heard breathing.

Slow.

Controlled.

Then a man whispered.

“You should stop digging.”

The call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Daniel was in jail.

Victor was in custody.

May you like

But someone out there believed there were still secrets worth protecting.

And I had no idea whose grave I was about to uncover next.
