Chapter 5 - The Signature

The forged signature looked almost perfect.

That was what scared me most.

Detective Ruiz showed me a scanned copy the following morning.

The loops.

The angle.

Even the strange way I crossed the final letter in my last name.

Someone had practiced.

A lot.

“Where would they get samples?”

Aaron asked.

I laughed without humor.

“Everywhere.”

Checks.

Birthday cards.

Mortgage papers.

Doctor forms.

Daniel had access to years of my handwriting.

The document claimed I had suffered emotional instability for months.

It said I had agreed Daniel could manage household assets until my condition improved.

Another document granted Evelyn temporary authority over certain accounts if Daniel became unavailable.

Everything led toward them.

Nothing led toward me.

Then came the medical section.

A statement supposedly written by me described paranoia.

Confusion.

Unreasonable fear of my husband.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at Ruiz.

“He created an explanation before I ever accused him.”

“Yes.”

“So if I told anyone he was controlling me…”

“He could point to this.”

“If I said he was spying on me…”

“He could call it paranoia.”

“If I tried to leave…”

“He could say you were having an episode.”

The elegance of the trap made me nauseated.

Months of strange moments suddenly connected.

Daniel correcting stories I told friends.

Daniel telling neighbors I was forgetful.

Evelyn joking that pregnancy had made me “dramatic.”

Mara asking whether I remembered conversations correctly.

They had not simply been insulting me.

They had been building witnesses.

My doctor arrived before noon.

The baby was stable.

My bloodwork had improved.

The numbness in my leg was beginning to fade.

But I would remain hospitalized at least another night.

“Stress matters now,” she warned.

I almost smiled.

Stress seemed like a ridiculously small word for what was happening.

That afternoon, Daniel’s attorney requested permission to contact me.

I refused.

Ten minutes later, he sent a letter through his lawyer.

Ruiz allowed me to read it after making a copy.

Claire,

This situation has gone too far.

What happened in the backyard was a private family matter that became dangerous because emotions were high.

You know I would never intentionally harm you or our child.

If you continue cooperating with people who do not understand our marriage, everything we built will be destroyed.

Please think about the baby.

We can fix this.

Daniel.

I read the last line again.

We can fix this.

Not I’m sorry.

Not I was wrong.

Not I buried my pregnant wife.

We can fix this.

Meaning I could fix it.

By becoming quiet again.

I folded the letter.

“Can I keep it?”

Ruiz nodded.

“It’s yours.”

I placed it beside the fake medical forms.

For the first time, Daniel’s manipulation looked small.

Predictable.

Almost pathetic.

Then Ruiz’s phone rang.

She listened for several seconds.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

I asked.

She ended the call.

“Someone broke into your house.”

My pulse spiked.

“The police released it?”

“No.”

“It was still sealed.”

“Then who?”

“We don’t know yet.”

“What did they take?”

Ruiz hesitated.

“The hidden safe was opened.”

My stomach dropped.

“The evidence?”

“We already removed the blue folder.”

“Then what was left?”

She looked at Aaron.

Aaron answered.

“A second compartment.”

We stared at him.

He continued.

“It was hidden behind the first safe wall.”

“We didn’t know it existed.”

“What was inside?”

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

Ruiz turned toward the door.

“But whoever broke in knew exactly where to look.”

That meant there was someone else.

May you like

Someone Daniel trusted enough to know secrets even Mara did not know.

And whoever that person was, they were still free.
