Chapter 1: Grace Under Fire

Chapter 1: Grace Under Fire

Anna glanced toward table twelve and shook her head.

“I’m fine,” she whispered to Madison. “They’ll get tired eventually.”

Madison didn’t look convinced.

“They’re not laughing because they’re happy,” she murmured. “They’re laughing because they think nobody can stop them.”

Anna only smiled.

“Then let’s not become like them.”

For another twenty minutes, she endured sarcastic comments, impossible requests, and deliberate attempts to embarrass her. She remained calm, serving every course with the same quiet professionalism that had earned her the respect of the restaurant staff.

But Preston Hale had grown bored.

Bored men with unlimited money often searched for entertainment.

When Anna returned carrying a fresh tray of drinks, Preston casually picked up a glass bottle of Coca-Cola.

“Catch,” he laughed.

Instead of tossing it, he flicked the bottle toward her.

The dark soda exploded across her chest and face.

The bottle struck the table with a loud crack.

Silence swallowed the room.

Champagne glasses froze halfway to lips.

Forks stopped in midair.

Even the musicians lowered their bows.

The four young men burst into uncontrollable laughter.

Bryce wiped tears from his eyes.

“That was worth every penny.”

Anna slowly set the tray down before it slipped from her trembling hands.

Without saying a word, she picked up a folded linen napkin and gently wiped the soda from her face.

“I’m sorry if I disturbed your evening,” she said softly.

The words somehow made the laughter louder.

Manager David rushed over.

“Anna... please go clean yourself up.”

She nodded.

As she disappeared into the employee hallway, several diners quietly looked away, ashamed that none of them had stood up for her.

None of them noticed the small gold wedding ring still resting on her left hand.

Chapter 2: The Man Who Never Raised His Voice

Twenty minutes later...

A black Bentley stopped outside The Imperial Room.

The driver stepped out first.

Then the rear door opened.

A tall man in a charcoal-gray suit emerged with slow, measured movements.

His name was Victor Kane.

Most people walking along the sidewalk saw only another wealthy businessman.

Chicago's underworld saw something very different.

Victor Kane owned Kane Security Holdings, a company with hundreds of employees, government contracts, and luxury office buildings across the city.

Officially.

Unofficially...

No criminal organization, corrupt politician, or dishonest businessman wanted their name spoken in the same sentence as his.

Victor had built his reputation on one simple principle.

He never shouted.

He never threatened.

He simply ended problems permanently.

Inside the restaurant, David approached with his practiced smile.

“Good evening, sir. Welcome to The Imperial Room.”

Victor nodded politely.

“I’m here for my wife.”

David frowned.

“I’m sorry... your wife?”

“Anna Kane.”

The manager's smile disappeared.

His face turned pale.

“You're... Mrs. Kane's husband?”

“Yes.”

David suddenly remembered.

Two years earlier, Anna had asked that no one mention her husband or family.

“She wants to earn her own way,” she had explained.

Victor respected that wish.

Until tonight.

“Sir... perhaps we should speak privately.”

Victor looked past him.

“Where is she?”

“In the staff room.”

“And who poured the drink?”

David hesitated.

Victor repeated himself.

“Who?”

The manager slowly pointed toward table twelve.

Four young men were still laughing.

Victor thanked him with a polite nod.

Then he walked toward them.
