Chapter 13 - War In The Dark
Muzzle flashes illuminated the underground station like violent lightning.
Alexander dropped behind a stone barrier.
Bullets struck the wall above his head.
Marcus moved toward Sarah.
Silas shouted orders.
Someone activated emergency lights.
Dim red lamps flickered on.
Alexander saw Cole dragging Sarah across the platform.
He fired at the floor near Cole's feet.
Cole released her.
Sarah rolled behind a crate.
Marcus reached her.
Victoria disappeared into the tunnel.
Silas grabbed the Golden Clock.
Alexander ran after him.
Silas fired twice.
Alexander ducked.
The second bullet cut through his coat.
He slammed into Silas near the tunnel entrance.
The clock fell.
Silas punched him.
Alexander answered with a harder strike.
Years of restraint disappeared.
He remembered Sarah being dragged from their home.
He remembered Lily crying.
He remembered the assassin walking toward his daughter's bedroom.
Silas tried to reach his gun.
Alexander kicked it away.
Silas laughed through blood.
"You think killing me ends this?"
Alexander grabbed his collar.
"I'm not going to kill you."
Silas smiled.
"Mercy?"
"No."
Alexander dragged him toward the station.
"Evidence."
Police sirens echoed faintly from somewhere above.
Real police.
Marcus had activated a federal emergency beacon before entering the warehouse.
Cole realized it too.
He ran toward another tunnel.
Sarah stepped into his path.
Cole raised his weapon.
Alexander aimed.
Before either man fired, Marcus tackled Cole from the side.
The deputy commissioner crashed onto the tracks.
His weapon slid away.
Federal agents began entering from the western tunnel.
Victoria's voice suddenly echoed through loudspeakers.
"You should all leave."
Alexander looked upward.
A timer appeared on an electronic panel.
03:00.
Marcus cursed.
Explosives.
Victoria intended to collapse the tunnel.
Alexander looked toward Sarah.
Then toward the Golden Clock.
Then toward the tunnel Victoria had taken.
Sarah understood immediately.
"Don't."
"She knows the route to the estate."
"Alexander."
"If she escapes, Lily will never be safe."
Sarah grabbed his arm.
"You have three minutes."
Alexander kissed her forehead.
"Then I won't waste them."
He handed Silas to Marcus.

Then he ran into the tunnel after Victoria.
Behind him, the timer reached two minutes and forty-one seconds.
