Chapter 19 - Breaking The Circle

Months passed.
The city transformed.
The Ouroboros investigation became one of the largest corruption cases in state history.
Thirty-eight people were convicted.
More than seventy officials resigned or were removed.
Adrian Cole received a long federal prison sentence.
Silas agreed to testify in exchange for protection.
The tunnels were sealed or placed under government control.
Victoria Blackwood remained missing.
Some believed she drowned.
Others believed she had escaped overseas.
Alexander stopped searching.
Not because he believed she was harmless.
Because he refused to allow her shadow to control his family.
Sarah created the Blackwood Justice Foundation.
Its first program provided legal assistance to people falsely accused through corrupt investigations.
Its second protected families threatened by organized crime.
Alexander funded both programs personally.
He sold several luxury properties to do it.
The newspapers called it an attempt to repair his reputation.
Alexander did not care.
One evening, he returned home to find Lily sitting beside Nero on the front steps.
The Doberman had recovered from his wounds.
A scar remained beneath his shoulder.
Lily stroked his head.
"Daddy?"
Alexander sat beside her.
"Yes?"
"Was Grandpa a bad man?"
Alexander considered lying.
He decided his family had already suffered enough from lies.
"He did bad things."
Lily looked worried.
"But he tried to fix them?"
"Yes."
"Does that make him good?"
Alexander looked toward the sunset.
"It makes him human."
Lily thought about that.
Then she asked another question.
"Are you a good man?"
Alexander smiled sadly.
"I try to make good choices."
Lily leaned against him.
"Mommy says that's more important."
Sarah stood in the doorway.
Alexander looked at her.
The fear that once haunted her face was gone.
He joined her inside.
The Golden Clock remained in the living room.
Alexander had considered destroying it.
Lily convinced him not to.
"Bad memories can teach good lessons."
So the clock stayed.
Not as a symbol of wealth.
Not as a family treasure.
As a warning.
Every hour, its chime reminded Alexander that power became dangerous when protected by silence.
That night, he removed the golden Ouroboros coin from his safe.
He walked outside with Sarah and Lily.
Together, they buried it beneath a young oak tree.
No display case.
No monument.
No ceremony.
May you like
The serpent belonged in the ground.
The cycle belonged in the past.
