Chapter 1: The Call That Changed Everything

Chapter 1: The Call That Changed Everything

Rosa's hands trembled, but this time she didn't listen to fear.

She reached into the pocket of her apron, pulled out her old phone, and dialed emergency services.

"My employer's baby isn't waking up," she cried. "Please hurry. I think he was given something he shouldn't have."

Before she could finish, Valeria stormed across the kitchen.

"What are you doing?"

Rosa held Santiago tighter.

"Saving him."

Valeria snatched for the phone, but Rosa stepped backward.

"You stupid maid!" Valeria hissed. "Do you know what you've done?"

"I know what you did."

The words surprised even Rosa.

For months she had been invisible.

Now, she refused to disappear.

Within minutes, sirens echoed through the quiet neighborhood.

Paramedics rushed inside.

One immediately took Santiago from Rosa's arms while another asked rapid questions.

"What did he ingest?"

Rosa pointed to the empty bottle.

"I saw her pour it into his formula."

Valeria laughed.

"She's lying. She's an illegal immigrant trying to blackmail my family."

But one paramedic examined the bottle.

His face turned serious.

"This medication is absolutely not for infants."

Santiago was placed on oxygen before being rushed into the ambulance.

Tomás arrived just as the doors were closing.

"What happened?"

His voice cracked when he saw his son surrounded by doctors.

Valeria ran toward him, already crying.

"The maid poisoned him!"

Tomás looked at Rosa.

She expected anger.

Instead, she quietly handed him the bottle.

"I should have stopped her," Rosa whispered through tears.

"But I can still tell you the truth."

Tomás stared at the label.

His face slowly lost all color.

Without another word, he climbed into the ambulance beside his son.

Valeria stood frozen.
