Chapter 1 – The Paper That Changed Everything

Chapter 1 – The Paper That Changed Everything

The laughter vanished the moment the lead police officer stepped into the manor.

His eyes weren't on me.

They weren't on my daughter.

They were fixed on the torn pieces of fabric still clutched proudly in my future aunt's hands.

"Ma'am," he said calmly, "would you mind placing that on the table?"

She rolled her eyes.

"Oh, for heaven's sake. It's just an old dress."

The officer didn't smile.

"No, ma'am."

"It's evidence."

The room fell silent.

My future aunt blinked.

"Evidence of what?"

I unfolded the document I had been holding.

"This dress isn't an ordinary dress."

"It belongs to the Ashcroft Family Heritage Collection."

Every guest looked confused.

The Ashcroft family was one of England's oldest aristocratic families.

Generations earlier, they had established a charitable trust preserving historical garments connected to royal ceremonies.

The tiny dress my daughter wore had been handcrafted from fabric left over from an official royal restoration project decades ago.

It wasn't valuable because of diamonds.

It wasn't valuable because of gold.

It was priceless because it was history.

The officer accepted my document and read it aloud.

"Registered Heritage Property."

"Loaned to Miss Emily Carter for today's ceremony."

"Any intentional damage constitutes criminal destruction of protected property."

The color drained from my future aunt's face.

"No..."

"That can't be true."

One elderly woman stepped forward.

"I remember that dress."

"It was displayed behind glass twenty years ago."

People who had been recording suddenly lowered their phones.

The same guests who had laughed only moments earlier now stared at my future aunt as though she were a stranger.

She looked at the shredded fabric.

Then at the police.

Then at me.

For the first time in two days...

She realized she wasn't in control anymore.
