Chapter 2 – The Family Mask Falls

Chapter 2 – The Family Mask Falls

The officers asked everyone to remain inside the ballroom.

No one objected.

My fiancé, Edward, finally walked toward us.

He looked at the torn dress.

Then at his aunt.

"What have you done?"

She rushed toward him.

"Edward, tell them she's lying!"

"They're trying to embarrass our family!"

Edward slowly picked up one tiny piece of blue fabric from the floor.

His hands trembled.

"I know this dress."

His voice cracked.

"My grandmother told me never to touch it."

"She said if it ever appeared again..."

"...it meant our families had finally been reunited."

Every eye turned toward me.

Years before Edward and I met, his late grandmother had secretly funded the orphanage where I grew up.

When my daughter was born, she left instructions that one day, if true love ever brought our families together, the little heritage dress should be worn by the first child entering the manor as family.

That child...

Was Emily.

Edward looked at his aunt with tears filling his eyes.

"You didn't just tear a dress."

"You destroyed my grandmother's final blessing."

His aunt tried to defend herself.

"She looked poor!"

"I thought she was pretending!"

Edward shook his head.

"No."

"You only saw poverty because you never learned to recognize dignity."

The room remained completely silent.

Several relatives quietly walked away from his aunt.

One by one.

Without saying a word.

For the first time in her life...

Status couldn't save her.

Money couldn't protect her.

Her own family refused to stand beside her.
