Chapter 18: Bridget's Testimony

Chapter 18: Bridget's Testimony

The crowded, heavily guarded courtroom fell completely, pin-drop silent as the heavy oak double doors at the back of the room swung open. The relentless murmuring of the press gallery instantly ceased, replaced only by the mechanical hum of an electric wheelchair rolling down the center aisle. Bridget Lawson entered, guided by a uniformed bailiff. She looked physically pale and undeniably fragile in her tailored navy-blue suit, the fabric draping loosely over a frame that had lost significant weight since the night of the fall. However, her posture was rigidly straight, and her eyes burned with a fierce, unbreakable, and terrifying resolve.

Tyler, sitting at the defense table, visibly shrank into his oversized prison uniform. He stared fixedly at the scratches on the wooden table, absolutely terrified to meet his wife’s gaze.

Bridget was maneuvered carefully into the witness box. After being sworn in, the lead prosecutor, a sharp-featured woman with a compassionate tone, approached the podium. "Mrs. Lawson, could you please tell the jury about the financial situation in your household leading up to the night of your thirtieth birthday?"

"We were completely bankrupt," Bridget testified, her steady, confident, and unwavering voice echoing powerfully through the vast, wood-paneled room. "Tyler had hidden hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt from me. He told me that our house was going into foreclosure, and the only way to save our lives was to orchestrate a massive, viral social media stunt."

"And what was this stunt, exactly?" the prosecutor asked gently.

Bridget took a deep, trembling breath, centering herself. "He told me the video hook had to be incredibly shocking to break through the algorithm. He explicitly directed me to lean over the balcony railing, and when he gave the signal, I was supposed to scream, 'He pushed me!' at the top of my lungs. It was explicitly designed to get the viewers' attention in the first three crucial seconds of the clip."

She turned her head slowly, finally locking her piercing gaze directly onto Tyler. He flinched visibly under her stare.

"I trusted him," Bridget continued, her voice cracking with raw, unadulterated emotional trauma that brought several jurors to tears. "He showed me the heavy-duty stunt net on the lower terrace that morning. He promised me it was a completely safe, controlled ten-foot drop. It was supposed to be a fake, harmless script to farm engagement. I never in a million years knew the man I married actually intended to cut the safety line and kill me for a viral video."
