Chapter 19: The Verdict

Chapter 19: The Verdict
The jury deliberated for less than three hours—a remarkably short and highly decisive amount of time for such a high-profile, complex felony case involving a mountain of digital forensics and medical evidence. When the bailiff announced that a verdict had been reached, the oppressive tension in the courtroom spiked to suffocating levels.
Tyler stood rigidly at the defense table alongside his highly paid, yet entirely defeated, legal team. His skin was pasty and sweating profusely under the harsh courtroom lighting. He trembled uncontrollably, his knees violently knocking together as the stern, uncompromising foreperson stood to read the final, legally binding decision.
"In the matter of the State versus Tyler Lawson, on the count of Attempted Murder in the First Degree, we the jury find the defendant... Guilty."
A collective, massive gasp rippled through the gallery, followed instantly by the furious clicking of camera shutters from the press row.
"On the count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, we find the defendant... Guilty. On the count of Felony Wire Fraud and Insurance Fraud, we find the defendant... Guilty."
Tyler collapsed heavily into his wooden chair, burying his face in his hands as a pathetic, guttural sob ripped from his throat. The silver-haired judge leaned forward over the massive mahogany bench, glaring down at Tyler with absolute, unfiltered disgust.
"Mr. Lawson, in my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a case of such chilling, narcissistic sociopathy," the judge stated, his voice booming through the microphone. "You willingly traded the life and physical autonomy of a woman who loved you for an algorithm. You reduced human life to a metric of engagement. There is no place in civilized society for a man who views murder as content."

The judge slammed the heavy wooden gavel down with absolute, resounding finality, the sharp crack echoing like a gunshot through the silent room. "Bailiff, remand the prisoner to custody without bail pending sentencing."
Tyler was immediately surrounded by three heavily armed deputies. They hauled him roughly to his feet, slapping heavy, clinking iron shackles around his wrists and ankles. As he was led away through the side door, he looked back at the gallery one last time, desperately searching for a sympathetic face, a fan, or anyone who cared. He found nothing but a sea of cold, disgusted eyes. His digital empire was dead, and his real life was officially over.
