Chapter 10 - The Five Million Dollar Lie

Charlotte confronted Ethan inside the old office command center.
She threw the banking ledger onto the table.
“Five million dollars.”
Ethan stared at the page.
His expression told her everything.
“You knew.”
Charlotte stepped backward.
“You actually knew.”
“Charlotte, listen.”
“Did Daniel pay you?”
“Yes.”
The answer shattered something between them.
Charlotte laughed bitterly.
“For what?”
“To leave you.”
She stared at him.
Ethan continued before she could speak.
“Daniel approached me six months before your mother died.”
“He knew we were engaged.”
“He wanted me gone.”
“And five million dollars was enough?”
“No.”
Charlotte slapped the ledger against his chest.
“Then explain it.”
Ethan took a breath.
“I accepted the money because your mother asked me to.”
Charlotte froze.
“What?”
“Elizabeth knew Daniel was testing everyone around you.”
Ethan opened a locked drawer.
He removed another envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Charlotte recognized her mother’s writing immediately.
Ethan,
If Daniel approaches you, accept whatever he offers.
He must believe Charlotte is isolated.
I need to know how far he is willing to go.
Charlotte read the letter twice.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because your mother made me promise.”
“She’s dead.”
“And Daniel was watching you.”
Charlotte looked away.
The anger remained.
But certainty was gone.
“What happened to the five million?”
Ethan handed her another document.
A charitable trust.
The full amount had been transferred into a legal fund under Charlotte’s name.
“You used his money to investigate him.”
“Yes.”
Charlotte sat down.
Everything in her life had become a maze.
Every betrayal hid another explanation.
Every ally carried secrets.
Ethan sat across from her.
“I should have told you sooner.”
“Yes.”
“I thought silence would protect you.”
“It didn’t.”
“I know.”
Charlotte looked at him.
“Do you still love me?”
The question surprised both of them.
Ethan answered immediately.
“Yes.”
Charlotte’s eyes filled with tears.
“That makes this worse.”
Her phone rang.
Lena Brooks.
Charlotte answered.
“We have a problem.”
Lena sounded tense.
“What happened?”
“Arthur Bell has surfaced.”
Charlotte stood.
“He’s alive?”
“Yes.”
“He escaped from Daniel’s men.”
“Where?”
“Federal safe location.”
Charlotte nearly cried with relief.
Then Lena continued.
“But he brought something with him.”
“What?”
“A recording from your mother.”
Charlotte’s heart stopped.
“One nobody knew existed.”
Twenty minutes later, Lena sent the file.
Charlotte pressed play.
Elizabeth Vale appeared on screen.
She looked directly into the camera.
“If Charlotte finds this, then Daniel has probably moved against the company.”
Charlotte held Ethan’s hand without realizing it.
Elizabeth continued.
“There is something I never told my daughter.”
Charlotte leaned closer.
“Richard Vale was not Charlotte’s biological father.”
Charlotte stopped breathing.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Elizabeth lowered her eyes.
“Charlotte’s biological father is alive.”
Charlotte felt the room tilt.
Her mother continued.
“And if Daniel discovers his identity, he will understand why Charlotte’s legal claim to Solmere is stronger than his own.”
The video ended.
Charlotte stared into silence.
May you like
Her father was alive.
And somewhere in the city, Daniel Vale was probably looking for him too.
