Chapter 20 - The Woman Who Owned More Than a Hotel

One year after the night Charlotte Vale was dragged across the lobby floor, Solmere Hotel hosted another gathering.

But this celebration was different.

There were no politicians demanding private rooms.

No corrupt executives trading favors.

No secret deals behind closed doors.

The ballroom was filled with Solmere employees and their families.

Housekeepers danced beside senior managers.

Chefs sat beside board members.

Former interns received scholarships from the Elizabeth Vale Foundation.

A photograph of Elizabeth hung beside the stage.

Charlotte stood near it.

She wore a simple navy dress.

Samuel approached carrying two glasses of champagne.

“For the owner.”

Charlotte accepted one.

“Temporary steward.”

Samuel smiled.

“Your mother would have corrected me the same way.”

Charlotte looked at Elizabeth’s photograph.

“I wish she could see this.”

“She can’t.”

Samuel paused.

“But she knew you could build it.”

Across the room, Arthur Bell was laughing with hotel security staff.

Lena Brooks had recently been appointed to lead a national corporate corruption task force.

Anna Mercer had started a patient advocacy organization.

Vivian Cross now ran the Rebecca Cross Foundation.

She and Charlotte were not friends.

Not exactly.

But they had become something more complicated.

Two women who had inherited the damage created by people before them.

And who had decided not to pass that damage forward.

Malcolm Voss was sentenced to decades in federal prison.

Detective Pike received a lengthy sentence.

Daniel Vale would spend the rest of his life behind bars.

None of that brought Elizabeth back.

None of it restored Charlotte’s lost years.

Justice could punish people.

It could not reverse time.

Ethan appeared beside Charlotte.

“You’re disappearing from your own party.”

“I’m thinking.”

“That usually causes trouble.”

Charlotte smiled.

He offered his hand.

“Dance with me.”

She accepted.

Halfway onto the dance floor, Ethan stopped.

“No dramatic speech.”

Charlotte narrowed her eyes.

“No secret five-million-dollar payment?”

“No.”

“No kidnapping?”

“Hopefully not.”

“No corrupt board meeting?”

“Definitely not.”

Charlotte laughed.

Then Ethan reached into his pocket.

She stared at him.

“You said no dramatic speech.”

“I lied about one thing.”

He knelt.

The people nearby began noticing.

Charlotte covered her face.

Ethan opened the ring box.

“I’ve spent most of my life trying to protect you by deciding things for you.”

He looked up.

“That was wrong.”

Charlotte felt tears fill her eyes.

“So this time, the decision is yours.”

He smiled.

“Charlotte Vale, will you marry me?”

Charlotte looked around the ballroom.

Samuel was smiling.

Arthur was recording.

Vivian was crying.

Then Charlotte looked at Ethan.

“Yes.”

The room erupted.

Applause filled the ballroom.

Hours later, Charlotte walked alone through the lobby.

The party had ended.

The marble floor reflected the chandelier lights.

She stopped at the exact place where Vivian had dragged her one year earlier.

Charlotte remembered the blood on her lip.

The whispers.

The humiliation.

The guests who had assumed a woman dressed simply could not possibly belong there.

She looked down at the marble.

Then she smiled.

A young night receptionist approached.

“Ms. Vale?”

“Yes?”

“Do you need anything?”

Charlotte looked around the hotel her grandfather had built.

The hotel her mother had protected.

The hotel criminals had nearly stolen.

The hotel where Charlotte had finally discovered who she truly was.

“No.”

She smiled.

“I have everything I need.”

Charlotte walked toward the elevator.

Before stepping inside, she looked back one final time.

She no longer cared that people knew she owned the Solmere Hotel.

Because the greatest thing she had inherited was not a billion-dollar empire.

It was the chance to build something better than the people who came before her.

The elevator doors slowly closed.

Above them, the silver Solmere emblem caught the light.

And for the first time in decades, the empire belonged to no conspiracy.

No corrupt executive.

No bitter relative.

It belonged to the people willing to protect it.

And at the center of it stood the young woman everyone had once mistaken for someone powerless.

Charlotte Vale.

The woman they dragged across her own hotel lobby.

The woman they tried to erase.

The woman who came back.

May you like

And the woman who finally won.

THE AND
