Chapter 17 - The Final Secret of Elizabeth Vale

Charlotte confronted Samuel immediately.
They met in Elizabeth’s old office on the hidden fifty-first floor.
Samuel stood beside the window.
He did not deny being there.
“Yes.”
Charlotte felt betrayed all over again.
“You saw her dying.”
“Yes.”
“And you left?”
Samuel turned.
“No.”
“Anna saw you leave.”
“Because Elizabeth ordered me to.”
Charlotte laughed bitterly.
“My dying mother ordered you to walk away?”
“She knew people were watching.”
Samuel opened his briefcase.
He removed a sealed envelope.
Elizabeth’s handwriting appeared across the front.
For Charlotte.
Samuel handed it to her.
Charlotte opened the letter.
My darling Charlotte,
If Samuel gives you this, then everything has gone terribly wrong.
Charlotte stopped.
Tears filled her eyes.
She continued reading.
Elizabeth explained that she had discovered Malcolm adding digitalis to her medication.
She knew Daniel had ordered it.
She also knew exposing them too soon would place Charlotte in danger.
That night, she called Samuel.
She gave him evidence.
She asked him to protect Charlotte from a distance.
Charlotte looked up.
“You knew she was poisoned.”
Samuel nodded.
“Why didn’t you take her to a hospital?”
“I tried.”
“She refused.”
Charlotte shook her head.
“That makes no sense.”
“She believed Malcolm had people inside the hospital.”
Samuel’s voice broke.
“She thought she had more time.”
“But she didn’t.”
“No.”
Charlotte turned away.
Samuel continued.
“When her condition worsened, I called for help.”
“Then why leave?”
“She told me Daniel would destroy you if he discovered our connection.”
Charlotte stared at her mother’s chair.
Elizabeth had spent her final hours protecting her.
It made Charlotte angry.
It made her proud.
It broke her heart.
Samuel approached carefully.
“I have lived every day since wishing I had ignored her.”
Charlotte finally looked at him.
“You should have.”
Samuel nodded.
“I know.”
Silence filled the office.
Charlotte folded the letter.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.”
“I’m not asking you to.”
Her phone rang.
Lena Brooks.
“We found Malcolm.”
Charlotte answered.
“Where?”
“Private airfield outside Newark.”
“He’s trying to leave.”
“He didn’t make it.”
Charlotte closed her eyes.
“Good.”
“There’s another problem.”
“What?”
“He had a briefcase containing financial records.”
“Daniel’s network?”
“Much bigger.”
Lena paused.
“Charlotte, your mother was investigating more than Solmere.”
Charlotte looked at Samuel.
“What are you saying?”
“Malcolm’s ledger connects judges, legislators, banks, contractors, and organized financial crimes across six countries.”
Charlotte felt the scale of the conspiracy expanding again.
“Can you prosecute?”
“We can.”
Lena’s voice hardened.
“But Malcolm is asking for immunity.”
Charlotte laughed.
“Of course he is.”
“He says he can testify against Daniel.”
“Let him.”
“There’s a condition.”
Charlotte knew she wouldn’t like it.
“He wants complete immunity for Elizabeth Vale’s murder.”
Charlotte went still.
“No.”
“He claims Daniel ordered everything.”
“He poured the poison.”
“I know.”
Charlotte looked at her mother’s photograph.
Everyone had used Elizabeth.
Daniel used her death.
Malcolm used Daniel.
Now Malcolm wanted to use Charlotte’s need for justice.
“No immunity.”
Lena sighed.
“Without his cooperation, Daniel may beat the murder charge.”
Charlotte closed her eyes.
Then she remembered the cloud recording from Montana.
The Geneva ledgers.
Vivian.
Anna.
Arthur.
Samuel.
They had more than Malcolm knew.
Charlotte smiled.
“Tell Malcolm we don’t need him.”
Lena paused.
“Are you sure?”
Charlotte looked at her mother’s chair.
May you like
“Yes.”
“For the first time, I am.”
