After five brutal days on the road for work, all I wanted was to come home.

To hold my wife.

To hug my little boy.

To finally breathe again.

Instead...

I walked straight into a nightmare.

My two-year-old son, Leo, was burning with a fever, crying so hard he could barely catch his breath.

My wife, Emily, stood alone in the middle of the kitchen, desperately trying to keep everything from falling apart.

She held our sick toddler against one shoulder.

A pot boiled over on the stove.

Fresh groceries were still scattered across the floor where she'd obviously dropped them.

The dog clawed at the back door, whining to be let outside.

The washing machine kept beeping from the laundry room.

The whole house looked like it had been hit by a tornado.

And my wife...

She looked completely exhausted.

Her hair was tangled.

Dark circles framed her eyes.

Her hands shook from pure fatigue.

Then I looked into the living room.

Just ten feet away...

Sat my mother and my younger sister.

The same two people who had promised they'd "take care of everything" while I was away.

My mother lounged comfortably on the couch, scrolling through her iPad.

My sister sat beside her, laughing at videos on her phone with earbuds in.

Neither of them looked up.

Neither of them offered to help.

Neither of them seemed to notice that my wife was drowning right in front of them.

I didn't say a word.

I stood quietly in the doorway.

I waited.

Surely one of them would notice.

Surely one of them would get up.

Surely...

Someone would help.

But instead...

My mother calmly lifted her teacup, took another sip, and called toward the kitchen without even looking up.

"Emily, sweetheart... is dinner almost ready? We're starving."

Everything inside me froze.

I watched my wife's shoulders slowly slump.

She closed her eyes.

One silent tear slipped down her exhausted face.

That single tear broke something inside me.

I let my suitcase fall onto the hardwood floor.

The loud crash echoed through the entire house.

Only then did they finally look up.

Their faces lit up.

"Oh! My boy's home!" my mother said with a bright smile.

I didn't smile back.

Without saying a single word, I walked right past them.

I gently took the wooden spoon from Emily's trembling hand.

Turned off the stove.

Lifted my feverish son into my arms.

Then wrapped my other arm around my wife.

The second she realized she was finally safe...

She completely fell apart.

Her whole body trembled as she buried her face against my chest and sobbed harder than I'd ever seen.

Only then did I turn to face my mother and my sister.

I looked each of them straight in the eye.

And I said one sentence.

A sentence so cold...

May you like

So final...

...that the entire room fell into absolute silence.
