Chapter 2: The Night Everything Collapsed

Chapter 2: The Night Everything Collapsed

The pediatrician arrived within forty minutes.

Fever. Dehydration. Stress-induced worsening.

“Where was he all day?” she asked sharply.

Emily didn’t answer.

She couldn’t.

She just stood in the hallway, holding onto the wall like it was the only thing keeping her upright.

I handled everything.

Medication.

Cool compresses.

Monitoring his breathing.

Emily eventually sank to the floor outside our son’s room and cried silently into her hands.

Downstairs, I could hear them.

My mother and sister arguing for the first time.

“It’s not our responsibility,” my mother insisted.

“She should’ve asked for help,” my sister added.

I walked downstairs.

They stopped talking immediately.

I placed the medical bill on the table.

Then another document underneath it.

A printed list of household messages Emily had sent while I was away.

Every one ignored.

“I trusted you,” I said quietly.

My mother scoffed.

“You’re choosing her over your own family?”

I looked at her for a long moment.

Then I replied:

“No. I’m choosing the people who actually act like family.”

Silence again.

But this time, it was different.

It wasn’t confusion anymore.

It was understanding.

And anger.
