Chapter 1: The Sentence That Ended the Illusion

Chapter 1: The Sentence That Ended the Illusion

The room stayed silent after my words.

No one moved.

Not my mother.

Not my sister.

Not even Emily, still trembling in my arms as I held our son against my chest.

My mother finally let out a nervous laugh.

“Oh come on, don’t be dramatic. We were just resting. Emily didn’t say she needed—”

“I did,” Emily whispered.

Her voice was so weak it barely carried across the room.

But it hit harder than anything else.

My mother froze.

For the first time, she actually looked at Emily—really looked at her.

At the sweat-soaked shirt.

At the shaking hands.

At our son’s burning face pressed against my shoulder.

My sister slowly pulled one earbud out.

“Wait… he’s sick?” she asked, like she was hearing it for the first time.

That’s when I spoke again.

My voice was calm. Too calm.

“You said you’d take care of everything.”

My mother straightened her posture.

“Well, we’re not nurses. We’re guests in this house.”

Something in me cracked—but I didn’t raise my voice.

Instead, I gently walked past them.

“Not anymore,” I said.

I carried my son upstairs.

And I didn’t look back.
