Chapter 12 - What Fear Looks LikeGlass exploded across the floor.

Emma ducked.

Thomas pulled Caleb down behind the desk.

Elliot dropped to his knees.

Nobody had been hit.

A rock rolled across the concrete floor.

Wrapped around it was a piece of paper.

Thomas grabbed it.

Two words.

STOP DIGGING.

Emma's face went pale.

Caleb stared at the broken window.

A car sped away outside.

Thomas ran toward the door.

Elliot grabbed him.

“No.”

“They want you to chase.”

Thomas stopped.

Caleb's pulse hammered.

This was no longer a story hidden in notebooks.

Someone knew where they were.

Someone wanted them afraid.

Emma signed.

We leave now.

Caleb nodded.

Elliot began gathering photographs.

Thomas looked surprised.

“You're coming?”

Elliot shook his head.

“No.”

“Then give us the evidence.”

Elliot hesitated.

His hands trembled.

Caleb watched.

Fear looked different on everyone.

On Grant, it became control.

On Daniel, panic.

On Thomas, shame.

On Elliot, paralysis.

Caleb stepped closer.

He signed slowly.

My father didn't get to choose what happened next.

Emma translated.

Elliot looked at him.

“I do.”

Caleb nodded.

Elliot stared at the photographs.

Then placed the entire metal box into Caleb's hands.

“Take it.”

They left.

Police arrived ten minutes later.

A report was taken.

Security footage from a nearby store captured only part of the fleeing vehicle.

No plate.

By evening, Caleb was exhausted.

He sat in Emma's apartment because Jenna's home address was now considered too predictable.

Owen Hayes entered the living room carrying pizza.

He was twenty-two.

Tall.

Curly-haired.

Deaf.

He signed quickly to Caleb.

So you're the kid who got my sister promoted.

Caleb smiled.

Apparently.

Owen dropped onto the couch.

Emma told me what happened at the restaurant.

Caleb's smile faded.

Owen continued.

I lost that scholarship when I was thirteen.

Caleb nodded.

Owen shrugged.

At the time I thought it meant I wasn't good enough.

Emma sat beside them.

“You were good enough.”

Owen rolled his eyes.

I know that now.

He looked at Caleb.

But when adults make decisions without explaining them, kids blame themselves.

Caleb thought about all the families in Rebecca's folder.

For the first time, the financial fraud felt even larger.

Grant had not merely moved numbers.

He had changed how children saw themselves.

Owen signed.

What are you going to do when you turn eighteen?

Caleb hesitated.

I don't know.

Owen smiled.

Good.

Caleb frowned.

Owen explained.

People are already trying to decide for you.

Not knowing yet means the decision is still yours.

Caleb liked him immediately.

Emma brought water.

Her phone rang.

Maria.

Emma answered.

Her expression changed.

“What happened?”

Caleb watched.

Emma looked toward him.

“Grant is at the restaurant.”

Caleb stood.

Emma continued listening.

“He asked for me?”

She hung up.

Maria had told Grant Emma was off.

Grant had left an envelope.

Addressed to Caleb.

Owen signed.

Don't go.

Caleb looked at Emma.

She nodded.

“He's right.”

Caleb sat again.

For once, he agreed.

Maria sent photographs of the envelope.

Leah arranged for it to be collected safely.

Inside was a single flash drive.

No note.

They opened it on an isolated laptop.

One video file.

Grant appeared on screen.

No suit.

No polished office.

He looked tired.

“If you are watching this, Caleb, then you've probably found Elliot Kane.”

Caleb stared.

Grant continued.

“Elliot knows part of the story.”

“He does not know all of it.”

Caleb leaned closer.

“Marcus Vale ordered the site tampering.”

Emma covered her mouth.

Grant looked directly into the camera.

“But Marcus did not intend to kill your father.”

Caleb's face tightened.

“He wanted to frighten Michael.”

“To make the project unsafe enough that he would walk away.”

“He underestimated the damage.”

Caleb felt sick.

Grant continued.

“I learned what happened after Michael died.”

“I should have gone to the police.”

“I didn't.”

“For that, I am guilty.”

Thomas's accusations.

Rebecca's suspicions.

The payment.

It fit.

Grant continued.

“But before you decide I protected Marcus for money, understand this.”

“Marcus had evidence against me.”

“I had already redirected foundation funds.”

“He told me if I exposed him, he would expose everything.”

Emma shook her head.

“So he chose himself.”

Grant continued as though answering her.

“I chose the foundation.”

Caleb's eyes hardened.

“He told himself he chose the foundation,” Emma whispered.

Grant looked exhausted.

“There is one more thing.”

Caleb waited.

“Your mother knew.”

Caleb froze.

“Rebecca learned the truth seven years ago.”

Caleb stared at the screen.

“She confronted me.”

“She could have exposed Marcus.”

“She didn't.”

Caleb's breathing changed.

Grant continued.

“You want to know why?”

The video paused for one second.

May you like

Then Grant said the sentence Caleb feared most.

“Because Marcus Vale is your grandfather.”
