Chapter 16 - The Trap at Table TwelveCaleb did not tell Emma about the photograph immediately.

That was a mistake.

He realized it fifteen minutes later.

Emma saw his face.

What?

Nothing.

She stared.

Caleb looked away.

Emma held out her hand.

Phone.

Caleb hesitated.

Her expression hardened.

He gave it to her.

Emma saw the photograph.

Then looked at him.

“You were going to hide this?”

Caleb signed.

I didn't want you scared.

Emma laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

“Congratulations.”

“You just did exactly what everybody has been doing to you.”

Caleb froze.

She was right.

He had decided what Emma could handle.

He had called it protection.

The same pattern.

Caleb signed.

I'm sorry.

Emma handed back the phone.

“Don't protect me with silence.”

He nodded.

Promise.

She nodded.

Promise.

Leah sent the message to investigators.

The photograph contained one useful detail.

A reflection in the restaurant window.

Part of a vehicle.

Black SUV.

Temporary parking permit visible.

Police traced the permit to a rental company.

The renter used a corporate account.

A.V. Strategic Services.

Adrian.

For the first time, they had a direct line.

Investigators wanted Caleb completely out of it.

Caleb agreed publicly.

Privately, he had another idea.

Emma hated it.

“No.”

Caleb signed.

He wants me quiet.

“Yes.”

So give him a chance.

Emma stared.

“That is the worst sentence you've signed all week.”

Caleb almost smiled.

The plan did not involve Caleb meeting Adrian alone.

It involved Adrian believing he would.

Through Marcus, word was deliberately leaked that Caleb planned to return the original recorder and settle privately.

Location.

Grand Ashford.

Table twelve.

Ten p.m.

Investigators monitored the restaurant.

Maria closed the floor early.

Emma insisted on being present.

Caleb sat at the table.

Same hoodie.

Same chair.

Same chandelier.

The room had become a stage where every version of his life seemed to collide.

At ten twelve, Adrian Vale entered.

He was fifty-seven.

Dark hair going gray.

Expensive black coat.

He looked like Rebecca around the eyes.

That disturbed Caleb more than anything.

Adrian sat.

No greeting.

“You created quite a mess.”

Caleb read his lips.

He signed.

Emma was not visible.

A remote interpreter fed his signs through an earpiece to investigators.

Adrian did not understand ASL.

Caleb typed on his phone instead.

YOU THREATENED EMMA.

Adrian smiled.

“Did I?”

Caleb showed the photograph.

Adrian barely looked.

“People take pictures.”

Caleb typed.

YOU THREATENED MY MOM.

The smile weakened.

“She was dramatic.”

Caleb felt anger.

He typed.

YOU KNEW ABOUT MY DAD.

Adrian leaned back.

“Your father was reckless.”

Caleb's fingers tightened.

The hidden microphone under the table captured every word.

Adrian continued.

“He wanted to expose people he didn't understand.”

Caleb typed.

DID YOU CUT THE CABLE?

Adrian stared.

Then laughed quietly.

“You think I climbed scaffolding myself?”

Caleb held his gaze.

WHO DID?

Adrian leaned forward.

“You want truth?”

“Truth is expensive.”

Caleb thought of Grant.

Same language.

Money.

Leverage.

Control.

Caleb typed.

I HAVE MARCUS'S RECORDING.

Adrian's expression changed.

There it was.

Fear.

“Where?”

Caleb typed.

SAFE.

Adrian looked around the restaurant.

“You came alone?”

Caleb did not answer.

Adrian smiled.

“No.”

“You didn't.”

He turned toward the mirrored wall.

For a moment Caleb feared he had seen someone.

Then Adrian spoke.

“Tell Grant he should have handled this years ago.”

Caleb froze.

Grant?

Adrian noticed his reaction.

“Oh.”

“You still think Grant and I are working together.”

Caleb typed.

AREN'T YOU?

Adrian laughed.

“Grant is trying to save himself.”

“I am trying to save the family.”

Caleb typed.

FROM WHAT?

Adrian looked at him.

“From you.”

The answer was so absurd Caleb almost laughed.

Adrian continued.

“You turn eighteen, you control the trust.”

“You expose everything.”

“Marcus goes to prison.”

“Grant goes down.”

“Every Vale company gets dragged through court.”

“Thousands of employees lose jobs.”

Caleb typed.

YOU KEEP SAYING OTHER PEOPLE WILL SUFFER IF YOU FACE CONSEQUENCES.

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

Caleb continued.

THAT'S NOT MY FAULT.

Adrian leaned closer.

“You sound like Rebecca.”

Caleb smiled.

GOOD.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

Then he said it.

“Your mother had the same stubbornness that got Michael killed.”

Caleb stopped breathing.

The room seemed to contract.

Adrian realized what he had said.

Too late.

Caleb typed slowly.

WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?

Adrian stood.

“I'm done.”

Caleb remained seated.

Investigators moved toward the dining room.

Adrian saw them.

His expression changed.

He turned toward the kitchen.

Maria locked the service door.

Adrian stopped.

Police entered.

An investigator approached.

“Mr. Vale, we'd like to speak with you.”

Adrian looked at Caleb.

For the first time, the arrogance disappeared.

He looked frightened.

Then he smiled.

“You still don't understand.”

Caleb watched.

Adrian spoke quietly.

“Grant knew exactly what would happen to Michael.”

Caleb's heart stopped.

“And he can prove it.”

Adrian was escorted away.

Caleb remained at table twelve.

Emma came from the back room.

She sat beside him.

He signed.

Was that enough?

Emma looked toward the investigators.

“For tonight.”

Caleb nodded.

Then an officer approached carrying Adrian's phone.

“We found something you may want your attorney to see.”

On the screen was a message sent three weeks earlier.

From Grant Whitmore.

HANDLE CALEB BEFORE HIS BIRTHDAY.

And suddenly Grant's role was no longer ambiguous.
