Chapter 13 - Blood Is Not LoyaltyCaleb replayed the sentence three times.

Marcus Vale is your grandfather.
Each time it looked equally impossible.
Emma sat beside him.
Owen stood near the kitchen.
Jenna arrived twenty minutes later.
Caleb did not greet her.
He turned the laptop toward her.
Grant's video played.
Jenna watched.
When Marcus's name appeared, she closed her eyes.
Caleb felt anger immediately.
You knew.
Jenna nodded.
“Yes.”
No more secrets.
“I know.”
You promised.
“I know.”
Caleb stood.
Jenna began crying.
He did not soften.
Not yet.
“Rebecca made me promise.”
Caleb signed.
She's dead.
Jenna flinched.
He hated himself the second he saw her face.
But the anger remained.
Jenna wiped her tears.
“You're right.”
“She is.”
“So I'm telling you.”
Marcus Vale was Rebecca's father.
Caleb had never met him.
Rebecca had stopped speaking to Marcus when Caleb was a baby.
Jenna explained why.
“Your grandfather believed everything could be solved with money.”
“He controlled Rebecca's college.”
“Her jobs.”
“Her relationships.”
“When she married Michael, Marcus hated it.”
Caleb signed.
Because Michael was poor?
Jenna nodded.
“Partly.”
“But mostly because Michael didn't fear him.”
Emma looked toward Caleb.
That sounded familiar.
Jenna continued.
“When Rebecca started the accessibility initiative, Marcus donated the first major amount.”
“He treated that donation like ownership.”
“Michael pushed back.”
“Grant tried to keep everyone happy.”
“And then money began disappearing.”
Caleb stared.
My grandfather ordered the site tampering?
Jenna's face collapsed.
“I didn't know that.”
Caleb believed her.
Her shock was real.
“But Rebecca knew?”
Jenna nodded slowly.
“She found out years later.”
“Grant told her.”
Caleb signed.
Why didn't she report Marcus?
Jenna hesitated.
“Because Marcus was dying.”
Caleb froze.
“He had advanced heart disease.”
“He begged Rebecca not to destroy the family.”
Emma's expression hardened.
“That doesn't explain it.”
Jenna nodded.
“No.”
“It doesn't.”
Caleb signed.
Then why?
Jenna looked at him.
“Because Marcus offered to restore all the money.”
Caleb laughed without sound.
It was bitter.
“He promised to restore every scholarship fund.”
“To resign from all control.”
“To stay away from you.”
Caleb signed.
Did he?
Jenna's silence was enough.
“No.”
Caleb turned away.
His mother had made a deal.
Not for herself.
Maybe for the children.
Maybe for Caleb.
But it had failed.
Emma signed.
She made a mistake.
Caleb looked at her.
Emma continued.
Good people can make terrible decisions when they're scared.
Caleb thought of Thomas.
Daniel.
Rebecca.
Even Grant.
Not equal mistakes.
Not equal consequences.
But human choices rarely fit cleanly into categories.
Leah arrived with documents.
She had researched Marcus Vale.
“He is alive.”
Caleb looked up sharply.
Jenna stared.
“What?”
Leah nodded.
“Grant lied about his health?”
Jenna shook her head.
“He really was sick.”
Leah answered.
“He received a transplant six years ago.”
Caleb almost laughed again.
The man everyone protected because he was dying had survived.
Rebecca had not.
Leah placed an address on the table.
Marcus lived in Virginia.
Large private estate.
Caleb signed.
I'm going.
Jenna immediately said, “No.”
Caleb looked at her.
She stopped.
Then sighed.
“I'm coming.”
This time Caleb nodded.
Two days later, they arrived at Vale House.
Marcus was eighty-one.
Tall despite his age.
White hair.
Sharp blue eyes.
He walked with a cane.
When Caleb entered, Marcus stared at him for a long time.
“You look like Michael.”
Caleb did not respond.
Emma stood beside him.
Marcus noticed.
“Interpreter?”
Emma answered.
“Friend.”
Marcus smiled faintly.
“Good.”
Caleb signed.
Did you order someone to damage my father's work site?
Emma translated.
Marcus's smile disappeared.
No greeting.
No small talk.
Caleb wanted truth.
Marcus looked toward Jenna.
“You brought him here for this?”
Jenna said, “He brought himself.”
Marcus looked back at Caleb.
“Yes.”
The answer was immediate.
Caleb's chest tightened.
Emma continued interpreting.
Marcus spoke.
“I wanted Michael frightened.”
“I wanted him off the project.”
“I never ordered anyone to hurt him.”
Caleb signed.
But he died.
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.”
And you covered it up.
Marcus's eyes hardened.
“I protected Rebecca.”
Caleb's hands moved faster.
No.
You protected yourself.
Emma translated every word.
Marcus gripped his cane.
“You think life is simple at seventeen.”
Caleb signed.
I think cutting safety equipment is simple.
You don't do it.
Marcus stared.
Emma's eyes flashed with pride.
Marcus walked toward the window.
“Michael was going to destroy everything.”
Caleb signed.
Your reputation?
“Our family.”
Caleb shook his head.
Marcus turned.
“Rebecca came to me years later.”
“She knew.”
Caleb waited.
“She said exposing me would not bring Michael back.”
“She asked me to repay what had been taken.”
Caleb signed.
You didn't.
Marcus looked away.
“I repaid some.”
Leah, who had joined by video call, had confirmed only a fraction was restored.
Caleb signed.
You lied to her.
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“She lied to you too.”
Caleb stepped closer.
Do not use my mother's mistakes to hide yours.
Marcus went silent.
Caleb continued.
Grant does that.
Maybe he learned it from you.
That landed.
Marcus's face changed.
For the first time, he looked old.
Not powerful.
Just old.
Then he said something unexpected.
“Grant didn't learn it from me.”
Caleb frowned.
Marcus looked directly at him.
“Grant has been stealing from the foundation since before Michael died.”
“I discovered it first.”
Emma stared.
Marcus continued.
“I threatened him.”
“He threatened me.”
Caleb signed.
With what?
Marcus slowly sat.
“Evidence that I ordered the site sabotage.”
Caleb felt cold.
Marcus smiled bitterly.
“You've been asking who controlled whom.”
“The answer is everybody.”
He opened a drawer.
Then removed an old cassette recorder.
“This is Rebecca confronting Grant seven years ago.”
Caleb stared.
Marcus placed it on the desk.
“She thought I destroyed the only copy.”
Caleb reached for it.
Marcus kept his hand over it.
“One condition.”
Caleb's expression hardened.
Marcus looked at him.
“You listen to the whole thing before you decide who your mother really was.”
Caleb pulled the recorder away.
May you like
He signed.
You don't get to set conditions anymore.
