Chapter 3: Learning to Feel Safe

Family court granted Peter temporary emergency custody.

His quiet home suddenly became filled with children's voices.

At first, those voices were almost silent.

Drew apologized for everything.

For dropping a spoon.

For using too much toothpaste.

For waking up from nightmares.

Peter realized someone had taught him that existing was a burden.

Every night, Peter sat beside Drew's bed.

"No one's angry," he would remind him.

"You don't have to earn dinner."

"You don't have to earn love."

One evening Lily accidentally spilled an entire glass of milk across the kitchen floor.

She froze.

Her tiny body shook violently.

Peter simply grabbed a towel.

"It's okay."

She looked confused.

"You're... not mad?"

He smiled.

"It's just milk."

Lily burst into tears.

Not because she was frightened.

Because it was the first mistake she'd ever been allowed to make.

Weeks later, Drew finally slept through an entire night without screaming.
