The door swung open, squeaking on cheap hinges. Richard’s brief moment of relief evaporated instantly into sheer, paralyzing horror.
I stood in the doorway, dressed in tactical black, the suppressed Glock resting easily in my gloved hand. The neon sign from the motel parking lot cast long, sinister shadows across my face. I stepped inside and kicked the door shut behind me, the sound echoing like a judge's gavel.

"Arthur... please," Richard begged, his voice cracking into a high pitch as he backed up until his shoulders hit the peeling wallpaper. The cheap gun in his hand shook so violently he couldn't hold onto it. It clattered uselessly to the filthy carpet. "I have money hidden! Cryptocurrencies! I can pay you! I’ll give you anything you want, I’m sorry!"
"You aren't sorry you hurt her," I said, my voice barely a whisper, yet it filled the small, filthy room with crushing pressure. "You're just sorry I found out."
