Chapter 19: Judgment

I didn't shoot him in the head. A quick bullet to the brain would have been mercy, an escape he didn't deserve.

I stepped forward with lightning speed, sweeping his legs out from under him with a brutal kick. He crashed hard to the floor, screaming in pain. With cold, practiced precision, I brought the heavy steel heel of my combat boot down directly on his right knee. The joint shattered with a sickening, wet crunch. He wailed in absolute agony, curling into a fetal position and clutching his destroyed leg.

"That's for her ribs," I said, looking down at him without a shred of pity.

I dragged his sobbing, heavy frame to the room's single wooden chair and violently zip-tied his hands tightly behind his back. I pulled a cheap burner phone from my pocket, dialed 911, calmly reported a heavily armed cartel associate hiding at the motel, and dropped the phone onto his lap.

"The feds are five minutes away," I leaned down, whispering the grim reality into his ear over his sobbing. "But I gave Vargas this address twenty minutes ago. The cartel is three minutes away. Good luck, Richard."

I walked out the door into the cool night air, leaving him screaming and thrashing in the dark.
