Chapter 1: The Lies Collapse
Margaret called it protecting the family.
The legal documents called it power of attorney.
The rehabilitation center called it long-term care.
But Ava knew exactly what it was.
A prison with polished walls.
She sat motionless in her wheelchair as Margaret lifted a paper medicine cup toward her lips.
"Take it."

The trust documents lay open on the desk.
Every page had been prepared.
Only one signature was missing.
Margaret believed Daniel was hundreds of miles away.
There was no one left to stop her.
Then the study door burst open.
Rosa rushed inside and slapped the medicine cup from Margaret's hand.
It crashed across the hardwood floor.
"She hasn't signed anything!"
For the first time, Margaret's perfect smile disappeared.
Her face twisted with rage.
She struck Rosa hard across the face.
"You stupid woman!"
Grabbing Rosa by the arm, she dragged her toward the door.
"No!"
Ava shoved the wheels of her chair with everything she had.
The wheelchair lurched forward.
One wheel caught the edge of the rug.
The chair tipped violently.
Ava hit the floor beside the unsigned documents, pain exploding through her shoulder.
The papers scattered across the room.
The medicine rolled beneath the desk.
Then the front door opened.
Footsteps echoed through the house.
Daniel.
He walked into the study—
—and stopped cold.
His mother's folder.
The unsigned trust papers.
The pills scattered across the floor.
The bruises darkening Ava's wrists.
The fear in Rosa's eyes.
The truth lay before him, carefully disguised as legal paperwork.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"Mom..."
Silence swallowed the room.

Then he looked at Ava.
"What did you do to my wife?"
