Chapter 1 – The Trial

It took Daniel three days to uncover the full horror of what his wife had orchestrated.

The truth emerged piece by piece—from hospital security footage, a fast-moving police investigation, and Evelyn's calm, meticulous account of everything she'd quietly noticed over the previous two weeks.

The scorpion had never been an accident.

It had been placed there with chilling precision.

Years before meeting Daniel, Marissa had worked for a company specializing in exotic pets—a chapter of her past she'd deliberately erased from the life story she told the man she married. But she hadn't severed every connection. Investigators discovered she'd kept in touch with a former supplier willing to ignore suspicious requests for the right price.

That contact had provided exactly what she needed.

A small, highly venomous scorpion.

Tiny enough to be sealed inside wet plaster before Noah's cast hardened.

Invisible.

Silent.

Waiting.

No doctor would have any reason to remove the cast for six weeks.

That was exactly what Marissa had counted on.

Detectives concluded her scheme operated on two levels.

The first was horrifying enough.

Noah would suffer increasing pain, swelling, and infection trapped beneath the cast. By the time anyone realized what was wrong, the venom and untreated tissue damage could become so severe that surgeons would have no choice but to amputate his arm.

A devastating tragedy.

One everyone would dismiss as an unforeseeable medical complication.

But that wasn't the true objective.

The amputation was only the mechanism.

The real prize was money.

Noah's late mother had established a substantial trust for his future—one that contained special provisions if he were ever classified as permanently disabled. Such a designation would trigger a complete restructuring of the fund, placing it under expanded guardianship oversight.

Oversight Marissa had already been positioning herself to control.

Months after Daniel's first wife died, while grief clouded his judgment, Marissa had quietly slipped stacks of legal documents in front of him. He signed them without reading every page, believing he was simply organizing the family's affairs.

He had unknowingly handed her the authority she needed.

This wasn't jealousy.

It wasn't resentment toward a stepson.

It wasn't a crime of passion.

It was a financial strategy.

Cold.

Patient.

Meticulously calculated.

Marissa had looked at an eight-year-old boy's arm... and decided it was an acceptable price to pay for complete control of his future.
