Chapter 2 – A Promise Kept

Chapter 2 – A Promise Kept
Weeks later, the hospital room felt completely different.
The machines were quieter.
The fear had disappeared.
Noah's arm was healing.
Doctors confirmed the venom had caused no permanent damage.
With therapy, he would regain full movement.
The day his cast finally came off, every nurse on the pediatric floor gathered outside the room.
When Noah slowly bent his fingers...
The hallway erupted into applause.
Daniel couldn't stop crying.
Neither could Evelyn.
Noah looked at both of them with a shy smile.
"Does this mean I can play baseball again?"
His doctor laughed.
"Not today."
"But one day soon."
Daniel knelt beside his son.
"I promise..."
"I'll never ignore your voice again."
Noah hugged him tightly.
"I know."
A month later, Daniel visited the attorney handling Noah's trust.
Every document Marissa had manipulated was revoked.
The trust returned entirely to Noah's protection under an independent guardian.
Daniel also established something new.
The Evelyn Brooks Foundation.
Named after the nurse who refused to ignore a frightened child.
Its mission was simple.
Provide emergency funding for hospitals to investigate unexplained injuries and protect children who might otherwise be overlooked.
When reporters asked Evelyn why she'd become involved, she answered with the same quiet honesty she always carried.

"I wasn't a hero."
"I simply listened when a little boy whispered that something felt wrong."
