CHAPTER 2 — THE ULTRASOUND THAT SHATTERED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 2 — THE ULTRASOUND THAT SHATTERED EVERYTHING

The lights dimmed as the ultrasound screen flickered back on.

Claire lay still, wiping tears silently from the corner of her eyes. Daniel stood at a distance now, as if afraid the truth itself might burn him.

The doctor moved the probe gently across her abdomen.

At first, there was only static.

Then shapes began to form.

A heartbeat filled the room—fast, steady, unmistakably alive.

Daniel exhaled shakily. “That’s my child…”

“Yes,” the doctor said. “One of them.”

Daniel frowned. “One of them?”

The doctor didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he adjusted the angle slightly.

The screen sharpened.

And Daniel froze.

Two distinct heartbeats.

Not one.

Not twins in the normal sense—but positioned in a way that made the doctor go completely still.

Claire whispered, “What is it…?”

The doctor leaned closer, his voice low.

“This is not a typical twin pregnancy.”

Daniel stepped forward. “What do you mean?”

The doctor swallowed.

“One fetus appears to be developing… normally.”

He paused.

“But the second—its genetic markers don’t match either of you completely.”

The room went silent again.

Daniel’s voice cracked. “That’s not possible.”

May you like

The doctor looked up slowly.

“That’s why I said… this changes everything.”
