CHAPTER 3 — THE SECOND HEARTBEAT

CHAPTER 3 — THE SECOND HEARTBEAT

That night, Daniel could not sleep.

The ultrasound image replayed in his mind—two heartbeats, one impossible explanation.

Claire sat across from him at home, exhausted, fragile, but silent.

For hours, neither spoke.

Finally, Daniel broke.

“I accused you,” he whispered. “I humiliated you in that office.”

Claire didn’t look up. “You already said everything you believed.”

His hands shook. “I was wrong.”

A long silence followed.

Then Claire said softly, “The doctor told me something before you arrived.”

Daniel looked up sharply.

“He said the second fetus… may not be human in the way we understand it yet.”

Daniel froze. “What does that mean?”

Claire’s eyes filled with fear—not of him, but of something far greater.

“I don’t know.”

Two weeks later, they returned to the hospital.

The doctor looked pale this time, unusually tense.

“We ran every test again,” he said. “We thought it was an error.”

Daniel stepped forward. “And?”

The doctor turned the monitor toward them.

The second heartbeat was still there.

Stronger now.

And synchronized.

Not random anymore.

As if responding.

As if listening.

Claire whispered, “It’s changing…”

The doctor nodded slowly.

“It’s developing at a rate that defies medical science.”

Daniel felt the ground beneath him shift.

“And the father?” he asked again, almost afraid of the answer.

The doctor hesitated.

Then said quietly:

“We still only confirm you as the biological father of one.”

A cold silence filled the room.

Claire grabbed Daniel’s hand tightly.

And for the first time, Daniel wasn’t thinking about betrayal anymore.

He was thinking about something far more terrifying—

Something inside his wife was not only growing…

But awakening.

ENDING

As they left the hospital, the sky outside had darkened completely.

Claire stopped at the entrance, placing a hand over her stomach.

Daniel looked at her, his voice softer than ever before.

“No matter what happens… I won’t leave again.”

Claire gave a faint, uncertain nod.

Behind them, through the glass doors, the ultrasound machine beeped once more on its own.

Long.

Steady.

Like a heartbeat answering from the dark.

May you like

And neither of them turned back to hear it again.

THE END.
