Chapter 1 – The Doctor's Discovery
Dr. Robles rushed to Matthew's incubator while two NICU nurses gently pulled Leticia away from Valeria.
"Call security. Now!" he ordered.
The room exploded into motion.
One nurse checked Matthew's oxygen levels while another carefully examined the tiny bruise on his left leg.
Valeria struggled to sit up, her lip bleeding and her shoulder throbbing from crashing into the incubator.
"I didn't touch him..." she whispered through tears. "Please believe me."
Dr. Robles knelt beside her.
"I know."
Those two words stopped everyone.
Leticia folded her arms.
"So you're protecting her? Look at that bruise! She squeezed him!"
Dr. Robles looked directly at her.
"No."
He gently lifted Matthew's tiny leg beneath the warming light.
"This isn't a fingerprint bruise."
Silence filled the NICU.
"The pattern is completely different."
He turned to one of the nurses.
"When was his last blood sample taken?"
"About forty minutes ago."
"And the IV line?"
"The team adjusted it during the shift change."
Dr. Robles nodded slowly.
Then his expression became serious.
"I need a portable ultrasound immediately."
Leticia scoffed.
"For a bruise?"
Dr. Robles didn't even look at her.
"No."
"I'm checking for internal bleeding."
The words froze every person in the room.
Valeria's heart nearly stopped.
Internal bleeding?
How?
Minutes later, the ultrasound confirmed everyone's worst fear.
Matthew had tiny areas of bleeding beneath the skin—not just on his leg.
Several new bruises were beginning to appear.
Dr. Robles took a slow breath.
"This isn't trauma."
"It's a medical condition."
"What condition?" Arturo asked as he rushed into the NICU after receiving an emergency phone call.
Dr. Robles looked at both parents.
"I believe your son may have a rare clotting disorder."
"A simple touch can cause bruising."
"Even routine medical procedures may leave marks."
"It has nothing to do with abuse."
Valeria burst into tears.
Not from fear.
From relief.
For the first time since Matthew was born...
Someone believed her.
Behind her, Leticia's confident expression cracked.
But Dr. Robles wasn't finished.
"There is something else."
"The severity of this disorder is extremely uncommon."
"I want to run genetic testing."
"And I recommend we test both parents as well."
