Chapter 1: The Gilded Cage

Chapter 1: The Gilded Cage
The Sterling Estate was a fortress of glass, steel, and suffocating silence. For sixteen-year-old Clara, it was a beautifully decorated tomb. For three years, her universe had been confined to the circumference of her custom-built, carbon-fiber wheelchair. Since the accident—a blurry, violent memory of twisting metal and shattering glass on a rain-slicked highway—she had been told her legs were useless.
Her father, Richard Sterling, had spared no expense in adapting the mansion. Ramps of imported Italian marble replaced staircases. Elevators with gold-leaf doors were installed in the west wing. Clara had the finest physical therapists, the most expensive dietary chefs, and a view of the Pacific Ocean that people paid millions to glimpse. Yet, she could not feel her toes. She could not walk the beach.

"You have to accept that this is your life now, Clara," Richard would whisper, his hand resting heavy and cold on her shoulder. "Your spine is permanently damaged. But I will never leave your side."
Clara had believed him. She had believed every word, every sorrowful look, and every tear he shed. She was the broken bird, and he was the benevolent savior who had built the ultimate cage to keep her safe from a world she could no longer navigate.
