"Protect the family!" someone yelled.
Richard turned, his charming smile instantly morphing into a mask of pure fury. "Get that boy out of here! Now!" he bellowed, his voice booming over the chaos.
But the boy was too fast. He slipped past the final line of defense, throwing his body forward and sliding onto his knees right beside Clara’s wheelchair. He was breathing heavily, sweat dripping from his brow, his hands trembling violently.
Before the guards could tackle him, he thrust a thick, heavily taped manila envelope into Clara’s lap.

"You need to read this," he gasped, his voice cracking with desperation. "Please. Before he takes it."
Rough hands grabbed the boy by his shoulders, hauling him backward. Clara stared at the envelope, her heart hammering against her ribs. In large, bold letters across the front, it read: CLARA STERLING - CONFIDENTIAL MEDICAL - DO NOT DESTROY.
