Clara’s feet, encased in delicate silver flats, pressed flat against the marble floor. She felt the coldness of the stone through the thin soles. It was the most beautiful sensation she had ever experienced.
With a guttural gasp of effort, she pushed harder. Her knees trembled violently, knocking together like dry branches in the wind. Fire shot up her calves, a painful, exquisite agony of nerves waking up from a medically induced coma.
"Sit down!" Richard screamed, lunging toward her, his hands outstretched to force her back into the chair.
Before he could reach her, Julian broke free from the distracted guards, throwing his body into Richard, sending the billionaire crashing into a towering display of white orchids.
Clara’s waist straightened. Her shoulders pulled back. The trembling in her legs was immense, threatening to collapse her at any second, but she locked her knees.
