Chapter 1 – The Silence Finally Broke

Chapter 1 – The Silence Finally Broke
Daniel placed his briefcase on the floor without making a sound.
The television continued playing.
His mother laughed at something on her phone.
His younger sister reached into another bag of chips.
No one even looked toward the kitchen.
Only his wife, Lily, stood there, struggling to stay on her swollen feet.
Daniel gently took the heavy pan from her hands.
"Go sit down."
She shook her head.
"They'll think I'm being lazy."
Daniel looked into her tired eyes.
"No," he said softly. "Tonight they'll know exactly who's been lazy."
He walked into the living room carrying the greasy pan.
The laughter stopped.
His mother looked up.
"You're home."
Daniel placed the pan on the coffee table.
Grease stained the expensive wooden surface.
"What are you doing?" his sister shouted.
"I'm returning something that belongs to all of you."
His mother frowned.
"What kind of attitude is this?"
Daniel pointed toward the kitchen.
"My wife is eight months pregnant."
No one answered.
"Whose dishes are these?"
Silence.
"Who cooked dinner?"
Again, silence.
"And who has been cleaning every single night while the rest of you watched television?"
His mother crossed her arms.
"She's the woman of the house."
Daniel stared at her.
"No."

His voice remained calm.
"She's my wife. Not your servant."
