Chapter 16 - THE STORM BEFORE DAWN

Clara ignored the due date.
Labor began during a thunderstorm at 2:18 in the morning.
Amy woke to a hard ache across her lower back.
She assumed it was another false alarm.
Then the second contraction came.
Eight minutes later.
Then the third.
Margaret appeared in the doorway wearing a robe.
"Amy?"
Amy gripped the dresser.
"I think it's happening."
Margaret's eyes widened.
"Now?"
Amy almost laughed.
"No, next Tuesday."
Margaret blinked.
Then both women started laughing.
Another contraction hit.
Amy stopped instantly.
"Okay."
Margaret grabbed the hospital bag.
"I'll drive."
Rain pounded against the windows.
Amy called her doctor from the car.
Then she stared at Daniel's name.
Margaret glanced at her.
"Call him."
Amy hesitated.
Then pressed the screen.
Daniel answered, half asleep.
"Hello?"
"It's time."
Silence.
Then sudden movement.
"What?"
"The baby."
"Oh."
Another pause.
"Oh!"
Amy heard something fall.
"Are you okay?"
"Yes."
"Which hospital?"
"Northwestern."
"I'm coming."
"Daniel."
"What?"
"Drive carefully."
His voice softened.
"I will."
The roads were nearly empty.
Amy reached the hospital twenty minutes before Daniel.
By then, she was in triage.
A nurse checked her.
"You're definitely staying."
Amy exhaled.
"How long?"
The nurse smiled.
"Babies don't send calendars."
Margaret held Amy's hand.
Daniel rushed in soaked from the rain.
His hair dripped.
One button on his shirt was wrong.
Amy stared.
"You missed a button."
Daniel looked down.
"Oh."
Margaret laughed.
Amy smiled too.
The next seven hours stretched endlessly.
Pain erased every other part of life.
There was no River North.
No court.
No wedding.
Only breathing.
Pressure.
Time.
Daniel stayed exactly where Amy allowed.
Sometimes beside her.
Sometimes across the room.
He brought ice.
He called nurses.
He never touched her without asking.
During one contraction, Amy crushed his hand.
"Sorry."
Daniel shook his head.
"Break it if you need to."
"Tempting."
They both laughed.
Then another contraction arrived.
By late morning, Amy was exhausted.
"I can't."
Daniel leaned closer.
"Yes, you can."
Amy glared.
"Do not motivational-speech me right now."
He immediately stepped back.
"Understood."
Margaret covered a smile.
At 11:37, the fetal monitor alarmed.
A nurse entered quickly.
Then another.
Amy saw their expressions.
"What?"
Her doctor came in.
"Clara's heart rate dropped."
Fear hit instantly.
"Is she okay?"
"We're repositioning you."
Daniel stepped back automatically.
The room filled with instructions.
Amy reached for him.
"Daniel."
He came to her at once.
His hand closed around hers.
"I'm here."
The monitor changed.
The doctor watched.
Seconds felt enormous.
Then Clara's heart rate recovered.
Amy started crying.
Daniel pressed Amy's hand against his forehead.
Neither spoke.
The danger passed.
Labor continued.
At 1:14 in the afternoon, Clara Margaret Collins entered the world screaming.
Amy laughed and sobbed at the same time.
The nurse placed Clara on her chest.
Tiny.
Warm.
Perfect.
Amy touched her cheek.
"Hi."
Daniel stood several feet away crying openly.
Amy looked at him.
"Come here."
He moved slowly.
Amy shifted Clara.
"Meet your daughter."
Daniel touched one finger to Clara's hand.
Her tiny fingers wrapped around him.
Daniel broke.
He lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
Amy knew the apology held far more than that moment.
She looked at him.
"Not today."
Daniel raised his eyes.
"Today you just meet her."
He nodded.
"Okay."
Margaret came closer.
Amy looked at her.
"Her middle name."
Margaret stared.
"You didn't."
Amy smiled.
"Clara Margaret Collins."
Margaret covered her mouth.
Daniel looked between them.
"That's beautiful."
Margaret kissed Amy's forehead.
"Thank you."
Hours later, Daniel sat beside Clara's bassinet.
Amy woke after a short sleep.
Daniel was whispering.
"I'll tell you the truth even when I'm scared."
He touched Clara's tiny hand.
"I'll never make you responsible for my pride."
Amy's eyes filled.
Daniel continued.
"And if your mom tells you I'm impossible, she's probably right."
Amy laughed softly.
Daniel turned.
"How long have you been awake?"
"Long enough."
He looked embarrassed.
Amy studied him.
"You can hold her."
Daniel froze.
"Really?"
"Really."
He lifted Clara carefully.
She settled against his chest.
Amy watched.
This was not reconciliation.
It was not the restoration of their marriage.
It was something harder.
A family built without illusion.
A relationship that would require truth rather than promises.
Outside the hospital window, the storm had passed.
Sunlight broke through.
Amy looked at Clara.
Then at Daniel.
May you like
The future no longer resembled the one she once planned.
For the first time, that did not frighten her.
