Chapter 5 - THE MERCER TABLE

The top six floors of a glass tower beside the Chicago River belonged to Mercer Development.

Amy knew the building well.

She had attended holiday parties there.

She had toasted Daniel's promotion there.

Years earlier, Daniel had brought her into the executive conference room, pointed toward the skyline, and told her none of the success mattered unless they shared it.

At noon, Amy entered that same conference room with Margaret and Rachel.

Daniel was waiting.

Charles Mercer sat at the head of the table.

At sixty-nine, Charles carried authority like a tailored suit.

His silver hair was immaculate.

His navy jacket showed no sign that his son's wedding had collapsed hours earlier.

Celeste occupied a chair several seats away.

Daniel immediately stood.

"Amy."

She passed him without replying.

Charles looked at Rachel.

"Who is this?"

"My attorney."

The entire room changed.

Daniel's shoulders sank.

"Amy, was that necessary?"

Rachel answered before Amy could.

"Yes."

Charles frowned.

"This is a family matter."

Amy put the folder on the table.

"You used my property to secure corporate financing."

She sat.

"It stopped being a family matter."

Charles leaned back.

"Nobody used anything."

Rachel opened the documents.

"We have the pledge agreement."

Celeste's expression tightened.

Charles looked at Daniel.

"Where did she get that?"

Amy noticed exactly what he had asked.

Not whether the document was real.

Where Amy had obtained it.

Daniel looked toward her.

"I don't know."

Charles faced Amy again.

"The agreement was part of a lawful financing structure."

"I was told I was signing insurance documents."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Charles turned toward him.

"Is that true?"

Daniel rubbed his jaw.

"Not exactly."

Amy almost smiled.

"Here's the text."

Rachel placed a printed screenshot on the table.

Insurance guy finally finished the packet.

Just signatures tonight and we're done.

Charles read it.

His mouth tightened.

"Poor wording."

Amy stared.

"That's what we're calling deception now?"

Daniel leaned forward.

"I never intended to deceive you."

Amy turned.

"You wrote that I didn't need the details."

Color rose in Daniel's face.

Celeste looked toward the windows.

Amy saw it.

"Why don't you want to look at me?"

Celeste turned back.

"This wasn't my decision."

"You own forty percent of the company."

Charles cut across them.

"Enough."

Amy faced him.

"No."

The single word irritated him more than shouting might have.

"I want to know why MHD Strategic Ventures needed my building."

Charles folded his hands.

"We are developing a riverfront project."

"With Celeste."

"With several partners."

"She owns forty percent."

"Currently."

Amy leaned forward.

"How much money did you borrow?"

Charles said nothing.

Rachel answered from the paperwork.

"Thirty-two million dollars."

Amy had already seen the figure.

Hearing it aloud made it real.

She looked at Daniel.

"You pledged my eight-million-dollar building against a thirty-two-million-dollar loan?"

"The building is only one component."

"That doesn't make me feel better."

"The project has major upside."

"I don't care."

"It's going to make money."

"I don't care."

Charles frowned.

"You should."

Amy turned to him.

"No, Charles."

Her voice sharpened.

"I should care that my husband deliberately kept me uninformed while using property my father left to protect me."

Charles glanced at Margaret.

"You brought a lawyer into this."

Margaret replied quietly.

"You brought Amy's inheritance into it first."

Charles stared at his wife.

The shift in power was visible.

Daniel stood.

"Can Amy and I talk privately?"

"No."

"Amy."

"No."

Pain crossed his face.

Amy forced herself to remember the email.

She doesn't need the details.

Celeste shifted in her chair.

"There is another reason the financing had to close quickly."

Charles turned sharply.

"Celeste."

Amy watched her.

"What reason?"

Celeste looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

The same silent warning from the ballroom terrace.

Amy's heartbeat accelerated.

"Tell me."

Celeste swallowed.

"The Mercer project was about to lose its primary investor."

Charles's voice went cold.

"Stop talking."

Celeste continued anyway.

"The company needed collateral immediately."

Amy frowned.

"Why?"

"Because the investor discovered something."

Daniel stood.

"Celeste."

She met his eyes.

"You should have told her before the wedding."

Amy turned toward her husband.

"Told me what?"

Nobody answered.

Charles hit the table with his palm.

"This meeting is over."

Rachel remained seated.

So did Amy.

So did Margaret.

Celeste inhaled.

"The project has been losing money for almost a year."

Amy looked at Daniel.

"How much?"

Celeste hesitated.

"Daniel."

Amy's voice cracked.

"How much?"

Daniel lowered himself into his chair.

"Fourteen million."

Margaret gasped.

Amy felt oddly calm.

"And instead of telling me, you used my property."

Daniel looked at her.

"I was trying to save the company."

"Your company."

"Our future."

"No."

Amy shook her head.

"You don't get to rename your decision after you make it."

Charles stood.

"The project will recover."

Rachel began collecting the papers.

"Then Mercer Development shouldn't have a problem releasing Mrs. Mercer's property from the collateral package."

Charles narrowed his eyes.

"That isn't possible."

Amy looked at him.

"Why?"

"The lender won't agree."

"Try."

"Business doesn't work like that."

Amy rose.

"My marriage apparently doesn't work the way I thought either."

Daniel stood with her.

"Amy, don't do anything drastic."

She faced him.

"What would you call marrying someone while hiding fourteen million dollars in losses?"

He had no answer.

Amy picked up the folder.

"I'm giving you forty-eight hours."

Charles laughed once.

"For what?"

"Remove Linden Street from the deal."

"You have no leverage."

Rachel turned toward him.

"That's an interesting assumption."

Charles went still.

Rachel continued.

"If the authorization was induced through misrepresentation, the lender may become very interested in how this collateral was obtained."

Celeste lost color.

Charles stayed silent.

Amy walked toward the door.

Daniel followed.

"Amy."

She stopped.

He moved closer.

"Please don't destroy everything because you're angry."

Amy turned.

Her expression was calm now.

That frightened him more than fury.

"I'm not destroying anything."

May you like

She opened the door.

"I'm just refusing to let you use me to hold it together."
