Chapter 1 - The Girl in the Water.

Chris Hale did not remember climbing out of the pool.

One second, he was waist-deep in cold water with his daughter locked against his chest.

The next, he was standing on the stone edge of the courtyard, shaking so hard that his teeth hurt.

Lily clung to his neck and coughed against his shoulder.

Rose petals stuck to her pale blue dress and wet hair.

Behind them, Vanessa Reed was dragging herself out of the pool after the slap that had knocked her backward into the water.

Her black dress had turned heavy and glossy around her legs.

She looked less frightened than furious.

"Chris, you have lost your mind," she screamed.

Chris did not answer her.

He lowered Lily onto a lounge chair and wrapped a white towel around her small shoulders.

One of the housekeepers, Marisol, was already calling emergency services.

The other, Elena, stood frozen near the doorway with one hand over her mouth.

"Daddy, she pushed me," Lily whispered.

Chris crouched in front of her.

"I know, sweetheart."

His voice broke on the last word.

Vanessa stepped closer, water streaming from her hair.

"She slipped," she insisted.

"I reached for her."

Marisol stared at Vanessa in disbelief.

"No, you did not," Marisol said.

Vanessa's face changed.

The innocence disappeared for half a second.

"You should be careful about accusing me of something you did not understand," Vanessa replied.

Elena finally moved.

She placed herself between Vanessa and Lily.

"I understood exactly what I saw," Elena said.

Chris looked at her.

Elena had worked in the Hale house for almost three years.

She was quiet, careful, and almost impossible to rattle.

Now her hands were trembling.

Sirens sounded in the distance.

Vanessa's expression tightened.

"Chris, listen to me before they get here," she said.

"I am done listening to you."

"You hit me."

"And I will answer for that."

Chris looked at Lily again.

"But first, you are going to answer for touching my daughter."

Vanessa laughed once, sharply.

"Your daughter?"

The words came out with a bitterness that made Elena look up.

Chris stood.

"Do not say another word about her."

"Then maybe you should have told me the truth about that house before promising me a future."

Chris felt the anger rise again, but he forced himself to stay where he was.

He would not touch Vanessa again.

He had already made one mistake in front of witnesses.

He would not give her another weapon.

Two police officers entered the courtyard with paramedics behind them.

The first officer, a broad-shouldered woman named Sergeant Dana Brooks, took in the scene without speaking.

She saw the wet child.

She saw Chris's soaked suit.

She saw Vanessa's reddened cheek.

She saw two witnesses who looked terrified.

"Nobody leaves," Brooks said.

Paramedics checked Lily while Chris remained within arm's reach.

Her lungs sounded clear, but they wanted to take her to the hospital for observation.

Chris agreed immediately.

Vanessa tried to follow.

Brooks stopped her with one hand.

"You stay here."

"I am her father's partner."

"Not for long," Chris said.

Vanessa turned toward him.

The hatred in her eyes was unmistakable now.

Brooks separated everyone and began taking statements.

Marisol spoke first.

She said Vanessa had grabbed Lily by the arm and thrown her directly into the pool.

Elena said the same thing.

Chris described running, jumping in, and pulling Lily out.

Then he admitted striking Vanessa.

Brooks studied him carefully.

"You understand that matters too."

"Yes."

"Even under these circumstances."

"Yes."

Vanessa gave her statement last.

She claimed Lily had been running near the edge.

She claimed she had tried to catch her.

She claimed Chris had attacked her because he was unstable and angry about an argument over property.

Then she said something that made Brooks stop writing.

"He told me the house would be mine after we married," Vanessa said.

Chris stared at her.

"I never told you that."

"You absolutely did."

"That house is held in trust for Lily."

Vanessa looked surprised for exactly one heartbeat.

Then her expression became smooth again.

Brooks noticed.

So did Elena.

At the hospital, Lily was given dry clothes and warm blankets.

She asked for hot chocolate and then fell asleep before it arrived.

Chris sat beside her bed while Marisol waited in the hallway.

Elena had gone back to the house with police to help them locate security footage.

Nearly two hours later, Brooks entered the room.

Her face told Chris the news was bad.

"The courtyard camera was disabled," she said.

Chris frowned.

"Disabled when?"

"Seven minutes before the incident."

His stomach dropped.

"By who?"

"We do not know yet."

Brooks pulled a chair closer.

"But there is something else."

She showed him a still image from the home's security system.

It showed Vanessa entering the utility corridor before the camera went dark.

She was not alone.

A man in a gray coat stood beside her with his face turned away.

Chris stared at the image.

There was something familiar about the man's posture.

Brooks zoomed in on his right hand.

A heavy silver signet ring caught the light.

Chris stopped breathing for a moment.

May you like

He had seen that ring at every Hale family Christmas since he was a child.

It belonged to his older brother, Grant.
