Chapter 4 - The Black Envelope.

Chris did not ask Lily another question until they were home.

He wanted Sergeant Brooks present.

He also wanted Lily somewhere familiar and safe.

By noon, two patrol cars were stationed outside Hawthorne House.

Vanessa had been taken into custody for questioning and released pending further investigation.

Chris hated that she was free.

He hated even more that she knew where Lily lived.

Lily led Chris, Brooks, Marisol, and Elena upstairs to her bedroom.

The room had not changed much since Natalie decorated it.

White shelves held picture books and stuffed animals.

A painted mural of swans crossed one wall.

On the dresser sat a wooden music box with small roses carved into the lid.

Chris knew the box.

Natalie had given it to Lily on her third birthday.

He had heard its song hundreds of times.

Lily lifted the lid.

A tiny ballerina turned in a slow circle.

Then Lily pressed two carved roses at the same time.

Chris heard a click.

A narrow compartment opened beneath the velvet lining.

He stared at it.

"How long have you known about that?"

"Since my birthday."

"Which birthday?"

"My last one."

Lily was eight now.

That meant she had discovered the compartment nearly six months earlier.

Inside was a small digital recorder, a folded piece of paper, and an empty space shaped like the key Lily now wore.

Brooks put on gloves.

"Do not touch anything else."

Lily pointed at the recorder.

"That is Mommy's message."

Chris felt his chest tighten.

Brooks photographed the device before pressing play.

Natalie's voice filled the room.

It was calm, warm, and painfully alive.

"My sweet Lily, if you found this, then you are old enough to understand one thing."

Chris sat down because his knees suddenly felt weak.

"Hawthorne House is not important because it is big or beautiful."

"It is important because people sometimes reveal who they are when they want something they cannot have."

The recording paused for several seconds.

Chris could hear Natalie breathing.

"There is a key inside this box."

"Keep it hidden unless someone begins asking you about the house, the deed, or the trust."

Lily glanced at Chris.

"If that happens, give the key to Elena."

Everyone in the room turned toward Elena.

Elena closed her eyes.

The recording continued.

"Elena will know where to take it."

"Do not give it to Uncle Grant."

Chris felt the words like a physical blow.

"And if Daddy is listening, I am sorry I did not tell you sooner."

The message ended.

For several seconds, no one moved.

Then Chris stood and faced Elena.

"You knew."

Tears filled Elena's eyes.

"I knew there was a key."

"You knew Natalie left instructions for Lily."

"I knew she planned to."

"Where does the key go?"

Elena looked toward Brooks.

"There is an old greenhouse at the far end of the rose garden."

Chris stared at her.

"The greenhouse has been locked for years."

"Not the greenhouse door."

Elena swallowed.

"Something under it."

They crossed the property together with an officer behind them.

Lily stayed inside with Marisol and another police officer.

The greenhouse was mostly empty except for old planting tables and cracked clay pots.

Elena moved to a stone basin along the back wall.

She pushed aside a rusted watering can.

Beneath it was a small brass plate set into the stone.

The key fit perfectly.

A hidden compartment released with a dull click.

Inside was a black envelope sealed with dark red wax.

Chris recognized Natalie's handwriting immediately.

CHRIS ONLY.

Brooks photographed the envelope.

"Open it."

Chris broke the seal.

Inside was a single page.

Chris,

If you are reading this, someone has already made a move against Lily or the trust.

Do not assume the person in front of you is the person making the decisions.

Grant is involved, but Grant is not acting alone.

There is a ledger in the lake house safe.

The combination is the date we first met, not the date we married.

Elena can explain the rest when she is ready.

Please forgive her for keeping my promise.

Please forgive me for asking her to.

N.

Chris read the note twice.

Then he looked at Elena.

"What promise?"

Elena opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, glass shattered behind them.

Brooks grabbed Chris and pulled him down.

A brick landed on the greenhouse floor.

Wrapped around it was another note.

One of the officers ran outside, but whoever had thrown it was already gone.

Brooks picked up the note with gloved fingers.

Four words had been written in thick black marker.

STOP DIGGING OR SHE DROWNS.

Chris was already running toward the house before Brooks could stop him.

Lily was no longer in her bedroom.

For five terrifying seconds, Chris could not breathe.

Then Marisol called from the hallway.

"She is here."

Lily stepped out of the bathroom holding a toothbrush.

Chris crossed the room and pulled her into his arms.

She laughed nervously.

"Daddy, I was brushing my teeth."

Chris held her too tightly.

Lily stopped laughing.

Over her shoulder, Chris saw her bedroom window.

A wet handprint marked the outside of the glass.

Someone had been standing on the roof.
