Chapter 17 - Margaret Hale Comes Home.

Margaret Hale did not wait for police to find her.

She arrived at Hawthorne House just after noon in a black sedan with a driver and an attorney.

She wore a cream suit, pearl earrings, and the expression of a woman arriving for a board meeting.

Chris watched from the library window as she walked toward the entrance.

For one strange second, he was twelve years old again.

Margaret had always entered rooms as if she owned the air inside them.

She hugged rarely.

She praised carefully.

She believed panic was a form of bad manners.

Chris had spent half his childhood trying to earn warmth from her and the other half pretending he did not need it.

Now police officers opened the door for her.

She stepped into the library and looked at her son.

"Christopher."

"Mom."

Her eyes moved over his face.

"You look terrible."

Chris almost smiled.

"Lily was thrown into a pool."

Margaret's expression tightened.

"I heard."

"You were forty miles away when it happened."

Her attorney shifted beside her.

Margaret did not look at him.

"I came because Grant asked me to."

"When?"

"Yesterday afternoon."

"Why?"

"He said Vanessa was becoming unstable."

Chris stared at her.

"And you did not call me?"

"Grant told me he would handle it."

"That sentence seems to have destroyed half this family."

Margaret's face hardened.

Brooks entered with two detectives.

"Mrs. Hale, we need to ask you questions about Silver Lake Holdings."

Margaret's attorney stepped forward.

"My client will cooperate within appropriate legal limits."

Margaret sat in the same chair where Grant had placed the forged deed days earlier.

Chris remained standing.

Brooks began with financial records.

Margaret admitted investing in Silver Lake Holdings.

She admitted the Hale family office had suffered major losses.

She admitted Grant structured transactions to conceal the extent of those losses from outside lenders.

But she denied ordering Natalie's death.

Brooks played Daniel's recording.

Margaret listened without changing expression.

"That is not an order to kill anyone," she said when it ended.

Chris stared at her.

"What did you mean by protect this family?"

"Stop the audit."

"How?"

"Persuade Natalie."

"Grant told you she would not back down."

"Then he should have found another legal solution."

"You said she should never get the chance to give me the files."

Margaret looked directly at him.

"I meant obtain the files first."

Chris wanted to believe her.

That desire made him hate himself.

Brooks asked about Vanessa.

Margaret admitted knowing who she was.

She claimed Grant proposed introducing Vanessa to Chris after several years because he was worried Chris might eventually remarry someone who would question the family's finances.

Margaret approved the introduction.

Chris felt disgust settle over him.

"You approved a woman being trained to date me."

Margaret's face barely moved.

"I approved an introduction to someone Grant believed would be compatible."

"She studied my life for years."

"I did not know that."

"She tried to get Lily's key."

"I did not know that."

"She threw Lily into the pool."

For the first time, Margaret's voice cracked.

"I did not know that."

Chris studied her.

There were tears in her eyes.

He could not tell whether they came from horror, guilt, or the realization that she had lost control of the story.

Then the front doors opened.

Elena entered with Evelyn and Lily behind a police escort.

Chris turned sharply.

"Why is Lily here?"

Brooks looked equally surprised.

Elena answered.

"The secure location was compromised."

"Someone tried to enter using hotel maintenance credentials."

"Police moved us immediately."

Lily saw Margaret and stopped.

"Grandma?"

Margaret stood.

For a moment, her entire face changed.

She looked like an ordinary grandmother seeing a frightened child.

"Lily."

Lily did not go to her.

She moved behind Chris instead.

Margaret noticed.

Pain crossed her face.

"Sweetheart, I would never hurt you."

Lily looked at her.

"Did you know Vanessa?"

No adult in the room had prepared for the question.

Margaret hesitated.

That was enough.

Lily's small hand tightened around Chris's fingers.

"You did."

Margaret took one step forward.

Chris raised his hand.

"Stay there."

Margaret stopped.

Evelyn stepped into the room.

The two older women faced each other for the first time in more than a decade.

Margaret's composure finally broke.

"You are supposed to be dead."

Evelyn gave a cold smile.

"So I have been told."

Margaret looked at Grant's empty chair.

"He said you were dead."

"Grant says many useful things."

Brooks watched both women.

"Mrs. Hale, did Grant tell you he arranged Evelyn Vale's death record?"

Margaret shook her head.

"No."

Evelyn stared at her.

"But you paid him to take control of my accounts after I disappeared."

Margaret's attorney interrupted.

"Do not answer that."

Margaret ignored him.

"Thomas told us you were gone."

"Thomas believed I was gone because Grant showed him a death certificate."

Margaret turned pale.

The story she thought she understood was collapsing around her too.

Chris saw something important in her reaction.

Margaret had done terrible things.

But she might not have known everything Grant had done in her name.

Then Brooks's phone buzzed.

She read the message and looked at Margaret.

"We found Grant."

Margaret gripped the back of a chair.

"Where?"

"At the county courthouse."

Chris frowned.

"Why would he go there?"

Brooks's expression hardened.

"Because he filed an emergency petition thirty minutes ago."

"He is asking a judge to remove you as Lily's guardian."

"His evidence is the video of you slapping Vanessa."

Chris stared at her.

May you like

Brooks continued.

"And he is asking the court to appoint Margaret Hale as temporary guardian of Lily's trust."
