Chapter 13 - THE SECRET MARGARET KEPT

Emma stared at her mother.
"What happened that night?"
Margaret sat down.
"I should have told you years ago."
Emma waited.
Margaret took a deep breath.
"Your father wasn't alone when he died."
"Who was there?"
"Me."
Emma's eyes widened.
"You were there?"
"I arrived after the accident."
"Accident?"
Margaret nodded.
"But it wasn't an accident."
She revealed everything.
Her husband had called her that night.
He sounded frightened.
He told her Richard had discovered the investigation.
Then he told her to take Emma and leave town.
But before Margaret could reach him, she heard a crash.
She arrived at the warehouse.
Her husband was on the floor.
Richard stood nearby.
Thomas was there too.
Margaret had hidden outside and watched.
Then she saw Daniel.
He was nineteen.
He was crying.
He begged his father to call an ambulance.
Richard refused.
Thomas told Daniel to leave.
Daniel stayed.
He tried to save Emma's father.
But it was too late.
Margaret had wanted to call the police.
Thomas threatened her.
"If you speak, your daughter dies next."
So she stayed silent.
Emma cried.
"You lived with this for twenty years."
"I was protecting you."
"You were protecting me from the truth."
Margaret nodded.
"I was afraid."
Emma hugged her.
For the first time, she understood her mother's silence.
It wasn't weakness.
It was survival.
Then Sarah interrupted.
"There's something else."
She showed them a recovered audio file.
Daniel's voice.
"I saw what my father did."
Emma listened.
"I've spent my whole life trying to undo it."
Daniel had known.
He had been fighting his father from the shadows.
But he had also made terrible choices.
Emma called him.
"Where are you?"
"Safe."
"I know what happened that night."
Silence.
"You believe me?"
"I believe my mother."
Daniel exhaled.
"Emma..."
"Tell me the truth."
"I was there."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was ashamed."
"You didn't kill him."
"No."
"But you watched."
Daniel's voice broke.
"I tried to save him."
Emma closed her eyes.
"I believe you."
For the first time in weeks, Daniel said nothing.
Then he whispered.
"Thank you."
Emma opened her eyes.
"But forgiveness comes later."
May you like
"I understand."
"First we end this."
