Chapter 19 - THE BLUE VASE
Five years later, Emma returned to the old apartment.
The building had been renovated.
The walls were painted white.
The floors had been replaced.
But the living room still had the same enormous windows.
Emma stood quietly.
She remembered the day everything changed.
The angry voice.
Her mother's bruised cheek.
The shattered vase.
The spilled groceries.
The lie.
Don't lie to me.
She almost smiled.
That sentence had become the beginning of everything.
Margaret joined her.
"You okay?"
Emma nodded.
"I'm remembering."
They walked toward the window.
Margaret looked outside.
"I used to hate this place."
"Me too."
"But now?"
Emma smiled.
"Now I think it saved us."
Margaret laughed softly.
"That's a strange way to look at it."
"Maybe."
Emma carried a small box.
Inside was the blue vase fragment.
She placed it on the windowsill.
Margaret looked at it.
"You kept that all these years."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Emma thought about it.
"Because broken things can become evidence."
Margaret smiled.
"And sometimes reminders."
"That too."
Her phone rang.
It was Sarah.
The foundation had just received a major donation.
A former victim wanted to help other families.
Emma smiled.
"That's wonderful."
After hanging up, she looked at her mother.
"We're doing exactly what Dad wanted."
Margaret nodded.
"Yes."
They left the apartment.
Outside, the sun was setting.
Emma stopped on the sidewalk.
For a moment, she looked back at the windows.
She remembered Daniel.
She remembered her father.
She remembered fear.
Then she turned away.
She didn't need to forget the past.
She only needed to stop living inside it.
Years earlier, she had walked through that doorway carrying grocery bags.
She had expected an ordinary afternoon.
Instead, she found a shattered vase and the truth.
Now she walked away carrying something different.
