Chapter 14 - THE FINAL PLAN
The investigators created a plan.
Thomas would be questioned.
Daniel would cooperate.
Victoria would testify.
Margaret would provide her statement.
And Emma would help identify the hidden accounts.
But Richard Mercer remained missing.
Without him, the case was incomplete.
Sarah discovered one final clue.
A property purchased under a false name.
A remote cabin in the mountains.
Emma recognized the location.
"My father used to take me there."
Sarah looked at her.
"Then Richard may know about it."
They traveled with federal agents.
The cabin appeared abandoned.
Inside, they found photographs.
Emma's family.
Daniel's family.
Every photograph had been marked.
Some showed Emma as a child.
Others showed Margaret.
Someone had been watching them for years.
Then they found Richard's office.
A computer sat on the desk.
It was still running.
A message appeared.
Welcome home, Emma.
She stepped backward.
Sarah grabbed her arm.
"Don't touch anything."
The screen changed.
Your father left something for you.
A video began.
Emma's father appeared.
He looked tired.
But alive.
Emma covered her mouth.
"If you're seeing this, something happened to me."
He explained the trust.
The investigation.
The danger.
Then he said something that changed everything.
"I don't believe Richard acted alone."
Emma stared.
Her father continued.
"Someone inside our family helped him."
The video ended.
Emma looked at Margaret.
Her mother was crying.
"Who?"
A sound came from behind them.
Everyone turned.
Richard stood in the doorway.
Older.
Thinner.
But unmistakable.
Federal agents raised their weapons.
Richard smiled.
"Nobody has to get hurt."
Emma stepped forward.
"You killed my father."
Richard shook his head.
"Your father made choices."
"You threatened my mother."
"I protected the family."
"You destroyed everything."
Richard looked at Daniel.
"You did that yourself."
Daniel stepped forward.
"No."
Richard laughed.
"You were always weak."
Daniel's voice was steady.
"No."
He looked directly at his father.
"I was afraid."
Then he took another step.
"But I'm not anymore."
Richard's smile disappeared.
Sirens sounded outside.
The cabin was surrounded.
Richard looked toward the windows.
There was nowhere to run.
